I want to breed rats, i am going to use an old fish tank, is a 10 gallon big enough for a trio?. this are not pets so i am not getting a costly wire cage.
In my opinion, a 10 gal is too small for adult rats. I only use them for a solo rat as a birthing or quarantine cage. I'd go with a 24x12 floor space or bigger. Home Depot makes some nice mortar tubs that do the job for about $5 each and I think they're about 24x16.

Breeding rats isnt exactly cheap. Caging, bedding, food, and good stock is expensive. Just because they are feeders instead of pets doesnt mean they should be treated differently. A happy, healthy animal is going to produce more babies and have more consistent litters.
Aquariums arent a real good option for rats. They dont get good airflow and ammonia builds up fast. I've found that I had to do more cleaning and bedding changes than when using tubs.
I've built racks out of the tubs that Flagg is referring to. I keep either 1:3 or 1:4 in them. I like them alot but a stack of 4 runs about $50.
