Speaker vibrations?

I will be getting a new stereo Monday or Tuesday. The place that i think it will look best is on the same dresser as my corn. Will the speakers be too loud or vibrate to much and stress my corn? I will probably use it as my alarm in the mornings so it will only be on for about an hour each day.

Im no expert on snakes, however i do know a bit about sound. Assuming you need it at any real level of volume, I wouldnt think the snake is going to apreciate the vibrations. If you blast it really high, I would bet the snake could be harmed. However if you keep it fairly low it should be fine. A good test would be to feel the side of your viv closest to the speaker for vibrations when its on. If there is ANY felt vibration, even the slightest, it will be amplified in the viv where the snake is.

Just my guess here, anyone with actual practical knowledge feel free to shoot my theory down..

Considering that speakers vibrate to create sound, and the speakers are on the same surface as the viv, I would think it likely that the vibrations would travel to the viv. And if you think about scale, a small vibration to you could well be quite large from the animals point of view.

Especially since snakes, being so low to the ground, are geared to be highly sensitive to vibration. I believe they can even use vibrations to "zero in" on a prey item before they can heat sense it or smell it.

corn snakes are specialised in feeling vibrations to find prey/sence danger.. i dont think they would like it..

I'm sure your corn wont mind it too much unless you leave it on for a long time. Mine pokes his head out and has a look around then just goes back to what he was doing.

It really all depends on what music you like rap and metal have more bass then pop and stuff like that and the volume is a major factor.

What if i where to put the speaker under the dresser. There wouldn't be as much vibration on the table top but the speaker will still be close by. Would that be ok?

Hmmm, Again taking from my days working with sonar..

I think you'd be ok there, so long as you dont turn it up too loud. This also assumes that you wont have too much base playing.

Finally, I have to go back to my original advice, after you set it up play something as loud as you would want to hear it and feel the viv, and the dresser top. If you cant feel anything at all you should be good. (Although snakes probably can feel things we cant, it shouldnt be painful if you cant feel it.) Then just watch the snake for a few days to be sure he doesnt change his behavior.
