Thought I read somewhere that when you want to have jungle corns (kingXcorn crosses) the female should be the king, and the male should be the corn???? Is this just myth?

bmm...

I believe it is a myth. I don't see why it would matter which was male or female. They have to be tricked into breeding, anyway. I would think it would be just as easy to trick a male cal king into breeding a female corn as it would be to trick a male corn into breeding a female cal king. I don't know definitely...but it just makes sense to me.

I'm not planning on creating any hybrids, but I've always been curious. How exactly would one go about tricking a couple of snakes into thinking their potential partner isn't what it really is? :)

I thought

It had something to do with the fact that the male california kings are more aggresive when breeding.....I have no clue though *L*

What I read is that you have a pair of Cal. Kings getting ready to mate, and a pair of corns ready to mate, and when they're just about ready to do the deed, you switch mates. You have to be careful when you do this so you don't accidentally put them together with the other snake of the same sex, though. :)

About the male cali x female corn thing...

I can only throw out what I've heard, having no practical experience in hybrid snakes. I've heard that cal kings tend to stay locked longer than corns. This would create a problem if the corn female wants to be 'done' and the male cali doesn't. If she tries to get away she could hurt the male and/or herself. The other thing I've heard is that cal kings are a bit more...er...endowed than corn males. This would be a problem with male cali to female corn, but not vice versa.

Just thought I'd throw out what I've heard, anyone with experience in this cross, please jump in.

Very interesting...

Thanks Hurley and bmm! What you have said makes a lot of sense! I would have never thought it would matter! So it sounds as if it is definitely better to breed a male corn with a female cal king.

As for tricking them...you don't have to have 4 snakes involved with the process. You can have 2 cornsnakes and one cal king. Put the two corns together and wait until they are ready to breed then take the female corn out and put in the female cal king. If your lucky, the male corn wil be so far gone that he won't care who he breeds. I've also heard that it helps to place the female cal king (while she is waiting to be bred) in the empty enclosure of the female corn. That way the scent of the female corn is on the female cal king. I don't know if this is accurate info? Anyone out there know if this really helps?

yes

Although I do not have first hand experience in hybrids either, I have heard that placing the female cal-king in the female corns enclosure does help. I have both seen it stated on forums and websites. I am sure there are tons of tricks of the trade. I wouldn't doubt shed helping with the "mood" either. PLacing a female corn shed with the female cal-king so the male corn will have more female corn scent to excite him. Not sure if *that* specific one works but yeah lots of different tricks!

I'd say try anything you think would help, as long as you keep in mind cal-kings can get a little "hungry" for snakes! *L*
