my snakes are kept in my room upstairs, i have a 75W bulb on from about 7am - 5pm which makes the tmp about 85F - 90F.. after that i shut it off because my room stays about 82F without it. I was just wondering if i should have the light on for a longer period of time or just keep it off completly till it gets colder outside. :shrugs:

What are you measuring your temps with? Ideally you want a digital thermometer with a probe to measure the substrate temps, not the ambient air temps.

Also, most would advise getting an under tank heater (UTH), rather than a heat lamp, as heat lamps can dry out your viv and UTH belly heat aids digestion. Do you have a temperature gradient in your tank? As in, a warm and a cool side?

If you stick with the heat lamp, and after accurate temp readings you have the same question, I'd just leave it on in the daylight hours then turn it off. Having a day/night cycle is just as important to snakes as to us. That may be another reason to consider an UTH for the winter, as you might have to leave your lamp on at night and confuse the hell out of your snake!

Have a read through the FAQ at the top of the husbandry and basic care section. :)

That's pretty warm, I wouldn't use the light. You might want to check out the FAQ at the top of the forum you just posted in, as that would have answered your question, and a few more I'm sure you'll have soon.....

i do have a digital thermometer to do my readings. i was told from the guy in petland, a guy from a private owned petshop, and my breeder just to use the heat lamp. turn it off at night time, and when it cools down for winter to get a moonlight bulb for nighttime.

Okaaaaaaay, so what did you learn from the FAQ? Ooooooooh, you haven't read it yet? Well, if you had read it, you would know that 90* is great for keeping french fries hot while they sit on the counter so your waitress can finish her cig, but a little hot for your poor snake. There is nothing wrong with using a lamp, I live in Florida and only need a couple heat lamps mounted on my racks to keep the whole thing warm in winter. I do not use any heat source during the spring/summer/fall as they stay between 75-85 degrees naturally, (night-day)...

Since it seems difficult to find, here is the link to the FAQ http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28341

lol no need to get mad i spent about 2 hours reading the faq... and i keep my light off for now like you said you do cause mine stays about 80F.. and i am going to a get a uth.

Howdy! Turning th elight off would be best. Some snakes like it warmer, but not corns. BTW, I would never be able to sleep with a room that warm, but the snakes would like it. lol
