Question about shedding size determination

t3ch

Desert Diamondback
Here is the question.

If I were to determine the length of my corn by her shedding, would I have to add/take off a couple inches?

I would measure her like normal but she's pretty agressive (I'm scared of getting bit :eek1: ). I only pick her up and handle her when I have to(cleaning the cage, photoshoot outside, etc).

The shed stretches quite a bit. No set formula for calculating it. There is a program available (I think serpwidgets has it on his site?) that can give you an estimate of her length.

As for her agressiveness, have you thought about trying to remedy that? Corns will pretty much always (of course there are exceptions) settle down with some regular handling. If she scares you too much or if you're afraid of getting bit you can always wear gloves at first. Just a thought.

Thanks alot. Serpwidgets does have a nice app on there site, just looked it up.

http://www.serpwidgets.com/Apps/apps.html thanks for this

Yes I plan on handling her more often, it's just a tad scary ya know. It seems like she's unpredictable. I used to handle her almost everyday for the first week and she never really tried to bite, seemed calm and everything and then out of nowhere she just bites my arm. Not like a strike or anything just a bite. Thanks for the help.

You can't measure from a shed; the amount of stretch is too variable. Better to have someone hold her while you follow along her body with either a piece of string that can be measured when you're done or a cloth tailor's measuring tape.

Because you don't handle her very often, she fears you. You seem very large to her, and she has learned that if she strikes at you, the big scary thing goes away and leaves her alone.

There is very little she can do to actually hurt you. Even if she bit you, the odds are that her teeth wouldn't even break the skin! If you are really worried, wear a long sleeve shirt and gloves. She can't bite through them. Pick her up and handle her gently. When she tries to crawl out of your hand, put your other hand in front of her, making it the only place she can go. Repeat this from hand to hand until she settles down. She will eventually realize that she isn't actually getting anywhere; she will also realize that big scary thing is not hurting her. You will have a better pet, and she won't stress out every time you reach for her, so you will have a healthier pet.
