What do you think of this?

I had a little chat with Elle earlier on about what kind of tubs to buy in the UK as I've had a lot of trouble finding tubs. She suggested a type of tub and I went online and had a look around... and on my travels this caught my eye. Would this make a good racking system for corns? And are the tubs big enough for adults do you think? I really like the look of this but I've never had racks before so I wanted to get some opinions.

This rack could also hold other relatively small snakes... kings, milks, rosy boas, etcs. What do you think?

I use the 9lt for hatchling and yearlings and the 50lt for adutls witch is more than big enough.

I just use heatmats underneath all wired up to a thermostat with no problems... these would be perfect for a racking system with is what I plan to do with them.

Tubs look fine to me but before i would buy the rack, which works out at about £160, look for those types of shelves in somewhere like B&Q & you might be able to save a few quid......

Thanks everyone. I'm a tad worried any heat source I use would melt the tubs, LOL. Is that a concern?

I did look for those shelves before, but no joy :( But I will look again, you never know.

It won't melt the tubs if the heat source is controlled (rheostat/thermostat)

Isnt that a little bit to expensive for a rack like that?

I can buy big tubs for 8 or 10 euro's a piece, and a rack like that would cost about 30 euro's over here (metal rack, a wooden rack is about 15 to 20 euro's).

The Really Useful Boxes seem quite common for snakes over here Plissken, we use the smaller ones for hatchlings and youngsters. I was looking at the purpose made racks, but what I wasn't sure on was the metal shelves - they would heat up with the mats, and possibly conduct the heat towards the "cool" side of the box?

www.easyracks.co.uk is a purpose made racking system based on Really Useful Boxes, and comparing the racks the Easyracks are made so the boxes just float above the mats, so I assume this is more efficient for heating. I would love to hear that the really useful racking is suitable though, as it is a hell of a lot cheaper!

Those racks look nice, but £450?? £90 for two tubs? OUCH! :sidestep: Think I'll still be making that trip to B&Qs... ;)

Yes, they seem rather expensive ... the 50 litre boxes are £10.31 to buy individually from Really Useful Products, and the heat strip RRP is £14.99, so the actual rack itself works out at £271.95. I am sure there is cheaper shelving available.

I would still be interested to see if the Really Useful Products racking is suitable, or if the metal shelves make it a "no go" ....

Me too. I think I will buy some individual boxes and get some shelving elsewhere... and then some heat strips / small heat mats. Am I right in thinking that the heat mat could go at the back end of the tubs instead of underneath?

Heat from underneath is preferable - my concern with using just a heat strip on the back is that ideally you want 1/3 - 1/2 of the tub heated, and just having the back of what is quite a large tub in contact with the heat mat may not provide enough usable warmth for the animal.

Okay, so underneath is better?

One way or another I have to start racking if I want more snakes... I just don't have room for the big vivariums. I've got two and have room for just one more. So once I have 3 snakes, which should be by the end of the year, I will be looking very seriously for a decent rack system.
