I just got a snake 4 days ago and today when I got home I took it out of its cage and it is sneezing. I know this is potentially bad, and want to know what could be causing it. I currently have bark for substrate, should I change it for aspin, I have heard that snakes seem to love aspin? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Also if this helps your diagnosis any, he had been fed the very day I got him, and hasent eatin since(4 days ago) and his eyes are starting to get cloudy so I know hes gunna shed soon. He is in a 55 gal tank, with 3 hides, a uth, and 2 large water bowl's, one on each side(hot and cold). and bark is the substrate. thanks again guys!!!

How big is your snake? What are the temps on the hot and cold sides? The knowledgable poeple on this forum are going to ask you these because they will probably need a little more info!

Where did you get the snake from? Cause it could be either a respiratory infection from poor husbandry and or hopfully dry skin from a shed cycle.
You could sit and check it out for a bit. After it sheds maybe it will be gone. If not, you could increase the temps to about 90 to help cure it but ...... not without using proper equipment. A thermometer with a probe and a thermostat to controll the temps. You don't want to burn the snake.
More folks will chime in soon with better ideas.

Good Luck

I would also start looking around for a good vet now in case it doesn't get better after he sheds. Never to late to be prepared!

Hi!
What kind of bark are you using? He may be sneezing from it. There are some barks that are toxic to corns. Aspen really is the best. If he has a respiratory infection, you may want to take him back for a refund. They shouldn't be selling sick snakes.

Corns only eat every 5-7 days (hatchlings), to once a week for older, so you shouldn'yt be worried if he hasn't eaten in 4 days. He isn't ready to eat yet.

We would love to here more about your set up. You can post pics if you like too!

I dont know what kind of bark it is i threw away the package, but it said great for snakes on it, and the lady at the pet store said thats what she recomended. I even rinsed it with steaming hot water before i put it in the tank to help get rid of any dust or debri. But I think I am going to change to aspen anyway.

As for my setup its kinda bare I think, theres just one tree thats about 2 feet long and maybe 18-20 inches high, some rocks that I made out of styrofome and covered with rockite or somthing (their ollow inside so he can hide), and one other hide thats kinda like one of those half logs. Then I have two water dishes, one is very large big enough for him to get his whole body into if he wanted, and then a second one on the other side of the tank, which is a little smaller. My under tank heater is an Exo-Terra heat wave, for a 50-60 gallon tank.
Sorry I dont have a camera but when I get pics I'll be sure to share them!! Also thanks for all your help everyone.
