Aspen Bedding Smell

Nanci

Alien Lover
Hi, I am using aspen bedding for my guys, and it is odorless. A friend is switching his from paper towels to aspen, and bought a huge bag. It smells like evergreen. Have any of you experienced this? I'm wondering if it is an artificial scent (or natural pine, for that matter) for use with rodents. He wonders if it is safe to use. I guess I wouldn't, but thought I'd ask.

Thanks,
Nanci

We found that some brands of aspen had a very strong scent - especially the shredded aspen. It was distinct from pine or evergreen scent though - but was very pungent. Was never a problem, just made us worry that it was going bad. It seemed to be when the aspen had a high percentage of the darker material - like wood directly under the bark, and I suspect it was from batches that contained a high percentage of small limbs and branches vs larger areas of trunk wood. We found that this scent disappeared within a day of placing it in aquariums but it was retained when we used it in tubs in a rack. We used it for adults only and never had problems,
