Racks Prebuilt or home made

I would like to increase my collection but I stuck with the decision to buy a pre built rack system or build one. any one have any good idea's and any pictures of there housing? and offer any advice to prebuilt or home made .

Homemede is EXTREMELY inexpensive to do. That's the way I would go myself. I looked at pre-made ones and the cheapest I could find was $205 including shipping and heat.

I built this one for less than $40 including the tubs; another $20 for heating. Took about 3 hours from the first cut to the last hole drilled in the tubs. Holds 6 32 qt sterilite (or 12 15 qt tubs). So I could pretty much build 3 of these racks for the price of one pre made one and still have some money for dinner and a drink or two.

It is much cheaper to build your own!

CornCrazy: Binder Clips!! That's so excellent. I'm planning to increase my collection (of one), and thought of stacking (no rack), but couldn't figure out how to keep the lids closed.

What do you use to heat them?

I'm lazy and lacking in handyman skills, so I bought mine from Animal Plastics. Pricey, but I love them (there are two more in another room).

I do not heat those. The room is kept at acceptable temps.

Homemade is best by far and depending on what you need can be very inexpensive. I'm using wall a shelf system and tubs in a heated room.

The breakdown.
Shelf supports $5 x2
Shelfs $8 Per shelf
Tubs Based off size (70x40x20cm $11)

I also stack two tubs per shelf and have Floor to ceiling room for over 10 tubs.

Wow those are some nice rack's the reason I'm looking at a heated rack is my entire home is electric was built in the early 60's, baseboard heaters etc. each room has its own thermostat, but my fish / future snake room is in the basement and also has electric wall mounted heat. and running all of those heaters to keep the home reasonably warm during the winter is expensive.
thats why I'm thinking a rack with its own heat low wattage lost cost to run.
heating the room to a comfy constant 78-80 :flames: all winter would just kill my electric bill

What are the dimension on the longer tubs? I have some 45qt tubs that are approx 10x16x22 (inches) but those look longer and taller than most clear tubs I've seen in the stores. I also have Iris VE-175 tubs that are 20 7/8"W x 52 7/8"L x 14 1/16"H. Still brainstorming how to build a rack for them.

nice rack..thats alot of boxes...does taking the clips on and off get annoying after a while?

awesome racks. for those who dont heat the whole room...what do you all use to heat the tubs? flexwatt? heat cable?

good to know it isnt too difficult to build your own. i'm thinking of going this route. i already have the sterilite tubs. i just need to work on the actual rack.

and i have tubs with lids that latch on...can they get out of those?

Is that MDF? Out of curiousity, how much did the materials cost? That looks very nice! I would be way too tempted to fill all those tubs.. Its enough that I have two empty slots on my rack lol.

mcifaldi- could you also tell your materials..and price for it? and the size of the tubs and rack?? thanks. Also nice looking rack!

Well it was a 4x8 sheet of melamine
break down as follows 4x8 3/4" sheet of melamine Lowe's $20.00
box of 1 5/8 drywall screws 8.00 Lowe's
(18) 6Qt sterilite shoe boxes 1.23 each Walmart =22.14
materials total 50.14
I'm still waiting on the heat and thermostate to come in the mail this week.

I had lowe's cut the sheet of Melamine:
(6) @ 35" x 13.5" for the shelves
(2) @ 25" x 13.5" for the sides
The only thing I didn't like about the melamine is that its a like a compressed paper board and with the the holes pre drilled and counter sunk screw heads the board still separated in a few of the corners I will use 3/4" wood board next time like pine. I hope this helps you out with your plans for a rack

mcifaldi- thanks! i don't know if i could convince my dad to make a rack that holds 16 tubs like yours does but i know he'll agree to make half of it..which would only be 8 tubs but thats good enough me...that'd be 8 more snakes for me...and once i move the two hatchlings i have now to bigger tubs i could put two more in those so thats 10. Anyway Thank you very much! helps me big time!
