Best thermostat for....

nebby3103

You're right, I want more
Ok, here's the deal. I have a cornsnake and will soon have a new ball python. Right now I'm using the ReptiTemp 500R, but I figure since this snake may be the second of many I should upgrade.

I'll need to control three different tempertures: the warm side of the corn's viv (82ish), the warm side of the BP's viv (82ish) and a hot spot for the BP (90ish). I wouldn't mind dropping all of those temps a few degrees at night, but I suppose it's not necessary as it's winter in N. Indiana and the cool side will be COOL.

So, what's my best option? How do I spend the least money and get the best quality thermostat(s)/rehostat(s) I can that will do the job. I have an idea, but I wanted to hear what some others thought before I shell out the cash. Thanks in advance.

P.S. If anyone owns a ball python and doesn't think I need the hot spot or the temps I put are wrong, let me know. Most of the care sheets and research say I need one.

Will the vivs be adjacent to each other and are they the same size? (Big corn, small BP?) Could they share one thermostat for the warm sides?

I have a couple 500Rs and have found that they need to be checked fairly often, not just set and forgotten about. Probably good you're replacing it...

Obviously the two 82 degree spots could be handled by the same thermostat. I'm not familiar with ball python husbandry or how most people care for them, and I'm not typically pro heat lamp, but using a heat lamp or other device might keep you from having to purchase a second thermostat to provide the warm side for the ball python. However, if you see more ball pythons in your future, it might just be easier to spring for two thermostats: one for the ~82 range and one for the ~90 range.

Is the hot spot for ball pythons a basking spot or just a warm hide like with corns? That would make a difference regarding my suggestion. Personally, if it were me, I would probably do a lot of experimentation and consider a lot of different possible set-ups to see what I could work out that would be functional. For simplicity sake, I've just offered what seems to be the easiest approach. :shrugs:

The 90 degree BP thing is for a basking spot. I guess I would use a ceramic heat element. Most care sheets I've read recommend this. Also, the vivs would be on shelves. BP below and corn above most likely.

i would hook the two UTHs into the 500R since the warm sides for both are the same temperature.
as for the basking spot for the BP, a ceramic heat element will work. i've used these in the winter for my turtles. they rarely get too hot and you probably could hook one up to an inexpensive rheostat. just make sure you have a good temp gauge to monitor the temp of the basking spot so it's not too warm.
the 500R thermostat isnt too bad, for what it is. i have one and hooked my BRB's and largest corn's UTHs to it. it doesnt fluctuate too much...i check it at least once a day and adjust it some.

I'm using the Herpstat Pro and love it. It's one of a select few that gives you 4 totally separate heat/cooling controls. I got mine at mgreptiles. I haven't found another thermostat that gives you more features than that one. It may seem expensive but when you think about getting 4 thermostats in one package it's not that bad. All the single thermostat units are pretty much stock as far as features are concerned. The most you can usually expect from a single thermostat is a night drop and a digital display from what I've seen. You said you only need 3... this way you would have to get anther snake for the 4th probe.:grin01:

Ok I'll spill it. Actually, two of you had great ideas. Vinny, you were one of them. Unfortunately at this point in time I don't have the money to by and incredible thermostat, so... I'm going to stick with the 500R for both of the 82ish areas and use the instructions in someone's post (sorry, I can't remember who wrote it right now) to build a cheap rheostat for the basking spot. If money is flowing freely (right...) later on I'll by that really nice you you recommended Lenny. Thanks all.

Spend the money. Do it right.

Herpstat. :grin01:

We use Herpstat IIs here (Pro's were not out yet when we purchased ours).
