Input needed! Would you like me to do a thread on step by step construction of a viv?

Blue Apple Herps

aka Matthew, PhD
I have seen a lot of threads lately about people with questions about building vivs. I am going to be making one for my brother for x-mas over the next month or so very similar to the one pictured below that I use as a display viv. It will be a two cage unit just like that one, although a little smaller in size.

My question is is to see if there is enough interest for me to take pictures along the way and give a step by step instruction thread on its construction. Give pics and info on all of the parts, cost, assembly steps, sizes of cuts, etc etc. Each time I worked on it I would document what I did and post the info/pics accordingly. My aim is for people to be able to see the construction process and to hopefully answer questions and provide a reference and maybe even inspire others to build their own.

I would like some input and to see if there's any interest in this. If there is then I'll do it, if there isn't then I don't want to waste my time.

Yes!

Yours was one of the pics I showed to my husband and said "I want you to make me one of these." :grin01: I would love a step by step thread...then I can make it myself.

Yes i 2nd that idea..
It would be good for everybody of all apspects of the hobby/addiction..

Especially younger people who might want a snake but cant afford everything on top the price of the snake itself...

In the U.K a snake is at least £50 upwards for a hatchling corn but a viv wooden viv can cost anything from £70 - £500
Just to get a basic setup inside a wooden viv would be around £150 for a first snake which can be very expensive for younger people in this country..

And also for people like myself who want to get into breeding etc.. Within a year i will have 8 adults / sub-adults and cant afford to buy 8 vivs at about £70-100 each and would love to have a few like you have in the pic as im setting up a room for my snakes ...

Great idea and i hope you end up doing it ..

I just think the two are different enough to justify a second thread. I wouldn't have known how to "convert" your large floor viv to a bi-level viv.

could build two (they're strong and stackable)...
or
build the sides to the hight of the doubled cages/condo. Use another 1x2 at the halfway point. this will be the start of the middle split. From there, follow the directions for the flooring/base for the bottom of the cage, then duplicate for the mid-level split...

That sounds great! I'm utterly lost when it comes to DIY, but if you make it really simple even I could be tempted to give it a go :)

The Nothing said:

That was a GREAT thread w/great info. I was going to make one that was even simpler and went step by step. I imagine there are people that have trouble decifering your plans or may have questions or be confused. My goal was to make one to where they essentially could print out the thread and have a step by step guide.

Any other comments?

Go for it! im going to be building a bigger viv in the near future and that looks sweet! PLUS if i build a double i can get another snake (another 2 if i use the old viv as well :) )

Yes please do i have 2 vivs just on the floor and my mom want me to build one that will hold them both or better yet do what you did, so please do.

Well I guess I'll do it then since there was some interest. I'll probably be starting this weekend, so look for the first installment early next week!

yes~! do it,, ive already started to make one that TheNothing posted, but mabey ill make 2 and try both ways :D

OH YES! I have been looking for some good step by step tutorials with real pictures I find them alot easier. Please do it!

hey matt...............i would also agree that you should keep your plans to do it. there are different methods and varieties out there that would appeal to some but not others. i have always believed that: "you will never know everything, but can always learn something".
i think it would be neat to have 10 different people show how they built their cage/viv and post them (maybe all in the same thread and not different ones, lol) as some people might not understand or comprehend the first 3 or 4 ways, but the next 3 might make sense to them. :shrugs:

Well I started it this weekend, got everything cut down. I decided to just wait until the whole thing is done before posting anything. If the weather is good and I can continue to work on it, should have it done and all the instructions posted up probably after thanksgiving.
