Viv and heating question

I'm getting my corn snake (a couple month old albino) in two days. I've done my research, and i'm definitaly prepared to take care of him. But i do have a couple questions:

First of all, i'm having troubling deciding whether to use a lamp as heat, or an undertank heating pad. I think the heating pad would be easier, but i'm worried that it might be fire hazzard. Actually, they could both be a fire hazzard. I mean, would it be safe to have the Viv on a wooden surface, or would that be dangerous?

The UTH will come with plastic stick-on things for the four corners of the tank to build it up slightly.

I have used two kinds of UTHs. Zoo Med Repti-Therm is commonly available. I have this in four vivs. Recently I set up another viv. The guy at the snake shop told me he preferred Exo-Terra Desert Heatwave UTHs because they didn't get as hot as the Repti-Therms.

My Repti-Therms are 120F when not on a thermostat. This is _way_ too hot. You should have some kind of rheostat or probed thermostat for your UTH, and a reliable thermometer that you can put right over the glass above the UTH to get the max possible temp if your snake should choose to burrow down to right on top of it.

I have Flukers Thermometer/Hygrometers which have been reliable for me that record max, min and current temps.

kay..i'll probably get an UTH. I think they have Repti-Therms and Exo-Terra, but i'm not sure, at my local pet store. If they have Exo-Terra i'll try to get that one :)

The max temp of a UTH , about 120 degrees, is far below the combustion point of wood or paper so you don't really need to worry about it being a fire hazard.
