New Babies

Jay@PJCReptiles

"Quality Before Quantity"
Hi Everyone,
One of our breeder rats just had a litter of pups. She is an Albino mated to a Blue Hooded Dumbo. The cool thing is that we didn't get one albino in the litter. They all came out Blue Hooded or Blue. Some are darker then others but still Blue. Now when our other breeding female, a Jumbo Curly Haired, has here babies we should get at least one "Blue Hooded Jumbo Dumbo Curly Haired" (aren't genetics fun? :crazy02: ) Here are a couple of pictures of them. Hope you like and thanks for looking.

How adoreable :) I love my ratatat girlies (siamese dumbo, blue english and hooded) but I doubt id ever breed them... they are a bit old :(

We think they are nice too.....Nice food for our snakes!...lol. I know what you mean Elle they are very cute. We have a few breeder rats that pop us out some extra feeders that we don't have to pay for. I even kept one from two litters ago. He is a Brown Jumbo Curly haired (I love the whiskers on them as they are very curly). When he got a little bigger we noticed a bump on his underside that we thought was a tumor. We took him to the vet and he said that one of his testicles hadn't dropped but he should live a perfectly healthy life so we kept him as a pet. We have named him "TC" - short for "Testicularly Challenged".......lol. Oh yeah, almost forgot, this is our 500th post ! :crazy02:

So the female must be a blue albino. Pretty lucky, though not really if they're all to be snake food =)

I was trying to figure out how to breed albino into my blues, just for the heck of it, but couldn't figure out how to tell if an albino carried the blue gene or not, short of breeding them.

I was thinking blue x albino, the next generation would be blue and albino carriers, probably all black. breed 2 black het blue/albino, and I'd get blacks, blues and albinos but no way of telling if the albinos were also blue or blue carriers. Also no way to tell if the blues carried albino.

At what point can you tell if a rat pup is going to have a Rex coat?

There's a beautiful male Rex rat at a pet store near me. I think I'm going to snatch him up and find a girl for him. I'm afraid I'll end up holding too many rats back trying to get more Rex furred rats though!

As far as genetics goes on rats I think we could use some input from Connie Hurley or ArcaneFate (Lauren) as they both work with or have worked with rats. We were not actually trying to create any kind of morph it was just a pairing to produce a few extra feeders. But I could see us keeping a 1.2 pair for future breeding.

You can tell they're rex as soon as you can see whiskers. They'll be curly. Rex is dominant so you should have 1/2 rex with the first litter from a rex x normal pairing.

I think the "Blue" gene is dominant as well. If breed to anything other then a Blue you should still get some in the litter.

No, blue is recessive. Which is how I was sure that your albino must also be blue. If she was just a carrier then 1/2 would have been blue.

Ugh, these doomed rat pinky threads break my heart. Since I am an animal lover and have kept a huge variety of critters as pets, I have found rats and corns to be my 2 favorite pets of all. (Yes, I prefer rats as pets over cats and dogs lol). I like my snake food dead before I ever see it, thanks :)

It makes me sad that these babies will never know playtimes, hammocks, treats and love. Godspeed little ones...

I used to breed rats, and it looks like you have blacks and blues. Which would make your female a carrier of blue. You would normally get 1/2 black, 1/2 blue with that type of pairing. I once bred a siamese female with a blue dumbo male, and got that exact same combo.

Unless the lighting is off in the pictures, anyway. But it looks from the pics that you have two different colors.
