Hi All, I am going away for christmas thisevening, and thought i would be getting in much sooner than i did today.
I need to feed my corn smij tonight because i am going away for a week, but i am running low on time - i have to leave in an hour!
I have the fuzzies in a snadwich bag, in a cup of hot water..... how long will it take for them to defrost so i can feed him?
 
If the bag is fully immersed, it should take 10-15 minutes, tops - if it's floating on the surface, maybe a little bit longer. Just feel the rodent through the plastic; usually, the skull stays frozen/coldest the longest, as it's the most "dense" part of the animal - once that no longer feels cool to the touch, you're good to go.

I defrost my fuzzies anywhere from between 5-10 mins. Maybe some people won't agree with me, but I've always done it this way and never had a problem. I just use hot hot water. Fuzzies feel totally thawed.

I put mine right in running hot water. By the time I get the water adjusted to exactly 100F, the fuzzy is thawed. Five minutes? I roll it around in my fingers to be sure it is soft and there are no cold spots. Then dry it off and wash my hands before getting the snake. Been bitten enough to have learned that lesson now!

Having my snake assume that my finger is food just freaks me out too much. I got tongs. :)
 
No kidding! Try having a hoggy latch on and start chewing! I didn't think that was a big deal until I saw this: http://www.herpnet.net/bite/

I got chewed when I was feeding three or four at once, so by the time I got to Zee, I thought his mouse needed to be rewarmed, so even though I'd washed after placing the mice in the feeding containers, before placing the snakes in the feeding containers, I forgot when I went to get Zee after rewarming his mouse. And he noticed instantly.

And the only reason I had been so religious about handwashing before handling the snakes, where I hadn't been so perfect before, was because Inez really tagged me about five days previously when I smelled of mouse when transferring her to her feeding container.

It's not all that unusual to react to mild venom in rear-fanged snakes. Years ago a good size Sonoran Lyre Snake bit me and I stupidly let him hang on and envenomate my finger thinking it would be no big deal. Was I surprised!!!!! Since I am one of those rare individuals that gets bitten by whatever I handle, I no longer keep "harmless rear-fanged snakes". Corns, Kings and Pits are just fine!!!
