Manzanita OK for corns?

[Insert Witty Commentary]
I see places selling manzanita root structures for reptiles and vivariums. It is expensive. So I have 2 questions, really...

1) Is manzanita at all harmful to my snake?

2) Since manzanita grows around here like crazy, am I safe to pick up some dead manzanita root, boil it for a bit to kill any critters, dry it out and use it in my viv, rather than pay $20 plus shipping for a piece?

I want to add a nice, natural climbing structure to my viv, but I don't want to pay the ridiculous prices some of these places are charging for wood I have in my backyard. I also have plenty of aspen trees. Could I do the same with aspen root pieces? Your thoughts?

As long as it doesn't give out strong scents, fumes, etc, you should be okay, just boil it and dry it out!
