Attaching the UTH to the Viv

ssmith_1187

In the land of Cheeeeeese
Kathy Love (a TRUE PROFESSIONAL in every sense of the word) and I have been talking and it looks like a replacement for Mr. Slithers might be on the way in the near future.

In preparation for our new snake, I have removed ALL existing Aspen, removed and bleached the wall bowl and sprayed the inside of the viv with a 5% bleach solution.

Originally I had attached the UTH to the viv with duct tape on the edges of the UTH . The thought was, later on down the road when a complete cleaning of the viv was necessary it would be easier to clean it if I removed the UTH. However, when I cleaned out the viv, I noticed the duct tape had pulled away from the glass essentially leaving the UTH laying on the table upon which the viv sits.

How do other folks attach their UTHs to their vivs aside from using the adhesive on the UTH itself, which it looks like I might resort to?

Regards,
Steve

I don't know about others but I attached the UTH on the bottom of the viv and use prob thermometer to keep track of the heat. You may want to put tiles or something else over the side that has the UTH to keep the heat in the area of 80-85 degree's but that seems to be the best way to attach the UTH.

I don't have my attached at all. In fact, I have both tanks with UTH pads sitting on a couple of thin paperbacks to allow for air circulation and the two with flextape are just sitting on the flextape. All of them are on a Herpstat ND or Herpstat Pro thermostat.

Weebonilass,

As a point of clarification. You have your UTH resting on a couple of small paperbacks, a slight air gap and then your viv above that air gap, is that correct?

Steve

Actually, the UTH is sitting on the shelf, then a paperback on each end of the tank to have it above the UTH. I started it before I had a thermostat and I know the pads came with little nubs to put on the corner of the vivs to raise it up a smidgeon with the note to allow circulation.

With the thermostat, their homes stay a steady 84 on the warm side. Probably should go in and drop that a little.

I don't have mine attached either. I just have the viv set a half inch up with 2 magazines under each end. The UTH is slipped in the gap between the table and the viv. I did this because I wanted to be able to move the UTH when I go to another size viv.

I'm pretty sure that's similar to what Weebonilass meant too.

Weebonilass & Jrgh17,

Thank you. I attached the little rubber feet that came with my viv (an All-Glass Critter Cage) to it so resting the UTH directly on the table upon which it sits should allow me the right amount of air gap and should work just fine.

Thank you again!!!!

Regards,
Steve

It's safe to keep the Plastic on the sticky side of the OTH and not have it be a risk of fire?, Had I'd known that I wouild have totally kept it from being stuck to anything so I could transfer it from one viv to another........Dang I knew I should have consulted the members here first!

I took the paper off my new one. The others were removed from a ten gallon to go on a 29 high tank that I was given and Kieran is in a 29 gal high that is resting on it's side and it didn't have the lip that the bottom of a tank has. I got Keiran a new one a couple of months back and it's still a little sticky, but it seems to wearing off in the air or becoming less sticky any way.

Snake mom, don't forget when you get a bigger viv, you might need a larger UTH for it. And you might want to fill the smaller viv with a baby.

Yes, it is safe. The flash point of paper is 400 and something F. If your UTH is that hot, you have already roasted your snake.

OK......here's my setup.

- Flukers Lamp Holder with an Exo-Terra Ceramic Heat Emitter.
- Foam Core for heat and moisture retention beside the Lamp Holder
- Big Apple Herp Thermostat probe and digital thermometer probe resting on top of the glass on the warm side of the viv.
- Exo-Terra Heat Wave heat mat resting on top of a piece of foam core with a 1/8 inch gap between it and the bottom of the viv.
- Not shown is a digital thermometer/hygrometer that is placed on the inside of the viv directly under the heat emitter

No adhesive. I use a folded bathtowel between the UTH and the dresser/bookcase/whatever the viv is sitting on. The towel insulates the top of the stand from overheating and possibly melting or lifting the laminate, while also providing airflow. When I want to clean or move the tank, there nothing to unadhere, and the UTH can be moved to another tank anytime I need to.
