Start with saving up $200 for the SB-600.

If you're asking about equipment---I'm serious about the speedlight because of what you'll be shooting.
If you're just looking for general literature on DSLR's, there's a few books I can suggest to you:
The Digital Photography Book- Scott Kelby
Mastering Digital SLR Photography- David Busch
Digital SLR Cameras & Photography for Dummies- David Busch
It just depends if you're looking for a basic overview of the DSLR, or if you want to get into the technical aspects of what it can do.
Of course, Nikon also offers classes. There are a few different locations in California you might consider.

Thank you for the links Gents..
Joe, I have looked at Scott's book.. It is looking like it might be an essential or must.. ( I guess I joined the dark side with the choice of camera huh... )..
I must, I must keep myself reading and learning.. The local Community College has a evening class on photography.. Something I considered before Christmas actually..

I picked up Mr Kelby's book.. intresting read, sort of kind of.. Easier for me to read this kind of a book rather than the technical books..

I came across a cool site that lists all expert reviews for a product in a single page. Most reviews for Nikon D50 SLR Digital Camera are positive. You might want to read them all from one page. Just compare what different experts are saying about it.

OK, being that I too am buying a Nikon D50 this week, would somebody tell me what a speedflash is and why its so essential. I'm getting some DSLR books too, but I would like to know what a speedflash is now. LOL. Guess I get impatient when I wanna get/learn about new stuff. Thanks guys.

Scott-
A 'speedlight' is nothing more than an external hot shoe flash. It is much more powerful than the on camera pop up flash and something that really is necessary when you want to start with macro photography. Two is better than one, but two is not necessary to get awesome looking photos.
Once you have it, you'll never go back. It's also compatible with the TTL system that Nikon has so in theory you should not have to adjust the flash when shooting say...an anery and then a blizzard. The camera should adjust that automatically.
