I just bought a ZooMed UTH, labeled for 10-20 gallons. FIrst off, that isn't an evil brand or anything, right? Good (-:


Two questions.


One, it says it recommends putting it on the side of the tank, I think just to protect the furniture the tank's on. Have you heard of doing that? is it bad for corns? I don't really want to 'cause that's just ugly, but I was curious about it.


Secondly, I don't want to *stick* it to the tank. I want to be able to remove it. I know that can be done, I've heard of people who suggest it... (this is a 10 gal. btw, and so I want to be able to upgrade to a 20 when Topaz gets bigger. at what size should I do that?) but I don't know how! Leave the paper protecting the sticky stuff on and use electrical tape to tape the edges? I've heard something about aluminum foil.... ? Please give me your advice. (-: Thanks!
 
You could stick it to a piece of cermaic tile and place the tile and UTH under your tank. Just keep your tank elevated an inch or so off of the tile and UTH, and you should get a good heat transferrance.

I use Cobra Heat Mats stuck on the sidewall of my tanks, FWIW...
 
Corn do best with belly heat, so I would put the mat on the bottom of the tank, instead of the side.

If you don't want to attach the mat directly to the tank, try applying it to a piece of glass or ceramic tile. then place that under the tank. The heat should reflect thru to the tank to warm the tank sufficiently.

The UTH mat should have come with 'spacers' to prevent damage to any furniture the tank is placed on (allows the heat to dissipate instead of build up under tank).
 
It did come with feet to put on the cage, thanks for reminding me to bring that up. (-: I have some on Mara's cage too, but I just followed directions on hers and put the heat mat directly on the cage. It's fine because that's strictly a snake cage, except that I have to face that end towards the wall which means her cage now (third time I've moved it around the house/room) has a lid that slides open over my bed instead of the logical over the carpet approach. Ah well.


Glass is a great idea... that sounds obvious now that you say it. (-: I wonder how thin they come so I can lose as little heat as possible in the transfer...
