I'm going to build a new viv to house some of my corns soon, i just wanted to know if anyone knows what i should and shouldn't use to build this. I hear some types of wood are poisonus to corns and need avoiding. Many thanks, Matt

The best wood avilable is 'melemine' like the stuff kitchen cupboard carcasses are made from. You can buy this from B&Q, Homebase etc and it available in different colours. If you know what sizez you want they may even cut it for you. It also comes in various widths.
Let us know hoew you get on because I am looking at building one for our '06 Okeetee.

Shouldn't use cedar it puts off an odor that may cause respiratory problems for your corn. For that matter try to stay away from any wood that tends to be Aromatic. Melamine is nice because it for building cabinets, it usually has laminate on it which can be easier to wipe off. Its heavy though and i would be curious to see how it handles a constant moist enviroment.

You could use just plain ol sanded plywood, or get fancy and go with a sanded birch plywood. You could stain it or paint it depending on what look you where looking for. That will also seal the wood making cleanup easier as well. And seal in any lingering odors from the wood itself. Sometimes pine can put off an odor, that is what most plywood is made from. Be sure to let any odors from paint or stain clear out before adding your snake.

I would stay away from pressure treated lumber. The chemicals used to make it pressure treated cant be good for herps in general if exposed to it for extended periods.

Try a search there has been a few threads about building your own vivs. Some with pics of others set ups.

Keep posted
