I just got my first snow corn snake 2 days ago and i read all about em before i got it, but i have 1 question if some 1 can help me out.

the tank has a heat mat and light that and i was wondering if it is ok to keep the light on all the time even at night cos the room he is in can get pritty cool in winter?

Thanks Damo

Hi damo I am also in the UK (England) where did you get your Snow from and how much and how old if you don't mind me asking. Thanks

I personally would not recommend keeping the light on all the time, corns are naturally nocturnal and are most active at night and leaving the light on may cause there natural activities to become messed up affecting their immune system, growth rate etc. In fact my two only ever come out after the light goes out. I also read that some people think it may even be a good idea to adjust the time the light is on to mach the seasons i.e. shorter in winter than in summer as it would be in the wild.

Anyway about a month or so ago my timer for the light stopped working so I left the light on all the time for about two weeks till I could get to the shop that sells them, and my two corns both stopped feeding and the female got in a VERY bad mood after a couple of days, trying to bite me and all sorts and she would not normally even think of.

As for it getting a bit cold of a night, I live on the east cost and the wind makes nights very cold (my viv is 6ft x 3ft x 4ft with only one heat mat that covers about 2 1/2 - 3ft of the hot end) and my two don't seem to be bothered by it much at all and will often choose to use one of the hides in the colder end of the viv even when the temp is quite low. However if you think that the temp is getting to low for them a couple of options are, either to get another heat mat and put it on the back of the viv in the hotter end or, I read somewhere that red lights will not affect their normal nighttimes activities, although I have not tried this. Either way you can have timers switch on stuff as it switches other stuff off so you don't have to mess about doing it your self.

I am sure this sounds strange but my corns seem to be happier when I treat them as I would like to be treated, decent varied food, comfy surroundings, stuff to interest me etc. and I do not know about you but if someone made me have a bright light on 24/7 I would soon get pretty pissed to say the least

IF the bulb is a nighttime bulb - black, red, blue - THEN you can leave the light on. If it's a normal white-light bulb - then I wouldn't do it.

Do you have a good thermostat in the viv , not one of those stick-on glass one . I had my temp way to high with a heat mat and a light bulb, went to radio shack and got a good therm now I dont need a light for heat. temp in the warm side varies from 80 to 84.

hi there

your sitution mirrors mine quite a bit... setup/snow corn/cold room
i leave the heat mat on all the time ,but only run the heatlamp during the day. at bed time i kill the light and throw a blanket over the tank to reduce heatloss. daytime airtemps in the tank are 70 at the cool end.. 55 overnight.

now, i bought my snowcorn, Chione, (named after the greek godddess of snow) at the end of november 02, at which time she was 6months old and 18" long. In the 3 months i`ve had her she`s grown 4" in length and just had her first shed under my ownership. I got her from a reputable herp dealer here in in lincoln for £30. Pinkies are 35pence each from the dealer too.
All in all im very happy with my pet and i`m very confident in handling and her basic care thanbks to the advice gained from these forums.. read up on what pp say and follow the general advice and you`ll be doing little wrong :)
