im setting up my cornsnakes tank tomorrow and going to get one...what is the best way to setup the tank? bedding, heating, etc...

Check out the FAQ's section. All your questions should be answered there. Do the research and get your setup stabilized before you get your new pet.

No...

If you want natural looking substrate go for aspen or coconut bark chips. Watch out though, apparently many dark reptile substrates carry woodmites. Its not worth the trouble to you or your snake. Personally I just use newspaper or kitchen towel, Its so much easier to clean and replace.

I use hemp for the burrowing species I keep, although its sometimes a bit dusty.

Heating wise you will need a UTH and a thermostat to control the temperatures on the warm end between 80-85. You will also need a digital thermometer to read the temperatures... NEVER guess as they could be dangerously high. UTH's are famous for overheating without any regulation.

Your corn will also need a hide on the warm and cool end of the tank so it can regulate its body temperatures whilst feeling safe and secure. Other decor such as vines or branches are entirely your prerogative.

Most importantly make sure the tank is 100% escape proof, corns are great escape artists!

whats wrong with it?...the pet store i bought it from was using the same thing in most of their reptile tanks

Pet stores often get it wrong... Corns can have allergic reactions to these kinds of wood (mainly pine) and have been known to die. Why not just stick to things that you KNOW will be just fine :)

Woodmites are completely harmless and are not hazardous to your snake. I think they help keep the mulch cleaner if you want to know, breaking down and eating small pieces of fecal matter that is missed and that sort of thing. Pine can have oils that are hazardous to your snake's lungs although I know of several people who buy the baked pine that has little or no odor. I know of people who use eucalyptus and say it's perfectly safe. I question that as eucalyptus has quite a strong odor and I figure the oils in it are just as hazardous and pine or cedar.
