New Acquisition: Tangerine Honduran Milk (Haji)

My sisters know that tangerine and hypo-tangerine Hondurans are on my wish list. So one of them found him at a small pet store, and I decided to take him. The other sister checked him out and picked him up. His type is about all I really know about him. He has a long, not-very-tapered tail, so I'm guessing that he's a he. I don't really know his age either, '05 or '06. He escaped and was lost in the pet store for three months. The clerk said that the snake was "fishing" in a fish tank when he was recovered. He also said that the snake was a lot bigger than when he escaped just the other day. I'm skeptical about the fishing part, but who knows? But he has a few, small, very superficial scrape/scars that look like they're from run-ins with rodents. They breed some mice and rats, so I think he was finding those. The scars will be gone in a shed or two. I think he's actually approaching blue now, so it'll be cool to see him freshly shed. :)

Wow, pretty face! I'm leaning toward female, until proven wrong by probing. Haji has a lot of black tipping already, which is way more prevalent in the female milks. I bet (s)he was drinking, not fishing...Great addition! I love Hondos. Especially the extreme hypo tangerines.

Thanks Nanci. And thanks for the info. I forgot about the black tipping thing. I'll have to research that. I'm probably not going to bother probing until I'm sure that I'm going to find a mate for him/her. I love the extreme hypo tangerines too. I might just get a pair of those, and breed this one with one of them...

(And I'm betting you're right about the fishing/drinking thing. :) )

I am sure that you will do this already but roving around a pet store... in water... I would take caution and quarantine him for a bit...

Cool lookin snake!!!

Haji sure has a male-looking tail, though. Make sure to let us know when you find out!

Thanks. I performed a very thorough mite/external parasite inspection, and I'm seeing no signs. But yeah, I'd given extra quarantine precautions some thought considering his recent history. Thanks for the reminder though. :)

Thanks Chris. Until proven otherwise, he's a he. :) I love his color too. Until I did a little more research, I didn't realize that the "tipping" (or "dirty melanin wash", as we corn people say) is somewhat undesirable. I think it looks pretty darned cool. But I still might have to find a pair of nice hypo-tangerines so I can have some "show quality" hondos. The anerys are pretty suh-weet too. Here's an old thread of Daemonox's showing her beautiful anery Hondurans.

Thanks. :) I really like the albinos, but you can't have them all, so I probably won't be getting any. :( The albino hondurans are about the coolest looking "in blue" snakes.

I can't think of an adult milk I've seen that didn't have black tipping. Lots of South and Central American snakes have it.
