spraying the tank

hi guys.
iv heard that some people spray the insides of the vivariums every now and then with water to provide a damp atmosphere for the snake for a certain amount of time?? is this a good idea?? will it benefit the snake??? should i do it for my new baby corn?
thanks guys.

I usually mist into the tank when my corn is in blue (shed), other people will put a moist hide into the tank during the shed cycle. Sometimes I mist on a daily basis during the summer. My house tends to be on the dry side so I try to maintain humidity by doing that. The proper humidity level is around 40-50% humidity, slightly higher during the shed cycle. Too high can lead to respiratory infections. If its on the low side its okay, because your snake can always take a dip into its water bowl if it feels the need for water, humidity. Proper humidity during shed cycle will ensure that your snake has a complete shed, meaning all the old skin will come off with nothing staying behind, which can lead to infections. hope that helps.

I used to spray down my tubs every few days. After moving to a new house (which is a lot drier) and having a few bad sheds, I started to spray a little every night. It has helped, so far all sheds have been 100%!

Get something to measure humidity. I don't suggest those analog dial things as they can be far off. Try an accurite thermometer. I use them for my animals and they read temp min/max and humidity perfectly. They are only about $12 at wal-mart.

thanks a lot matey. im goin to get a spray bottle 2night and i wil have a look for a good thermometer as soon as i can. Hes still only in a small tank yet but i think if i can find a small thermometer it will do the job just right.
thanks again.

Habba Mist

I use a Habba Mist made by Zoo Med. With the self contained tank filled with distilled water it works for about two weeks before I have to refill it. I have it set to mist twice a day for 15 seconds. The humidity stays between 55 to 60%.

It's about three years old and works great.

You may want to be careful of the distilled water, from what I have read that can actually be harmful to your snake if they use that as a primary source of water. Also 60% humidity is a bit high for a corn snake unless thier in shed, that's another thing you may want to look at. Just a couple of things you may want to think about. Good luck with your baby.

You are 100% correct. Drinking distilled water will screw up any animals electrolyte level. His water dish gets filled with bottled spring water with a drop of grapefruit extract.

Using distilled water in the mist machine is a must acording to Habba! Not only does it prevent cloging, any spray that hits the inside of the glass tank evaporates without stains.

"Mr. Bill" was an 18" yearling when I got him from Cathy Love on 4/15/04. he was born 6/03. He is now almost four years old and over five feet long. he eats 5 inch rats like they are going out of style. Every shed is perfect.

BTW... I just checked the humidity in the tank and it's 52%. The figure I gave in the prior post came from my faulty memory.

Regards,

Eric
