Public Service Announcement - Ceramic Heat Emitters

In the land of Cheeeeeese
I know this topic has been brought up before, but I feel it bears repeating.

My enclosure is set up as follows:

On the left side of the picture is an Exo-Terra 100 Watt, ceramic heat emitter used to keep the ambient air temperature at around 75 degrees. In the back left corner, a thermostat probe and thermometer probe are contained in a piece of Radio Shack cable wrap.

On the right side of the picture is a 9 Watt compact fluorescent bulb used in a 12 hour on, 12 hour off cycle. As on the cool side, a thermostat probe and thermometer probe are contained in a piece of Radio Shack cable wrap in the back right corner.

Well last night, I found Roxanne in the following situation:

Fortunately it was on the side with the compact fluorescent bulb and not the ceramic heat emitter. I put a thermometer probe under the bell of the lamp fixture and next to the screen top, the closest place to the ceramic heater emitter where she could reach and recorded a temperature of 111 degree.

Needless to say, I have since re-routed ALL thermostat probe wires and thermometer probe wires to enter the enclosure through the side with the compact fluorescent bulb fixture. Fortunately nothing happened to her.

I wouldn't really worry about it. Mine gets up under the little cage thing. As long as there is some kind of weight on the top she shouldn't get out. She might just be exploring and or exercising. You shouldn't really worry to much, nice set up too!

Once again just make sure there is some kind of weights on the top.

For got to say, if their is a way try and have like a little plastic thing around the wires. Or anything to keep around the wires to keep her off.

Um Jimmyman I don't think that was the problem...I believe the problem is that he didn't realize his ceramic heater was ommiting 111* of heat and that he was worried about his snake being so close to the heat source....

That being said, thankyou for the heads up ^_^ glad your snake is ok!

Corny,

It was a lot of different things.

I knew ceramic heat emitters got that hot, I just didn’t have an exact reading until last night.

I knew corns could climb even with a minimal amount of “furniture”, and last night just reiterated that point.

I always had a sinking gut suspicion that she could climb up the probe wires and was always worried that it might be the ceramic heat emitter side.

Lesson learned…always follow your gut to avoid a potential tragedy.

Regards,
Steve
