Male African House Snake (Freshly Shed)

Racer is an '06 from Trevor Y.. His colors are much brighter than his sister/girlfriend's (she's much more brown), but she has crazier iridescence. So I don't really have a favorite. I love both looks. I couldn't believe it when I weighed him today. He's a whopping 46g! :)

You know Roy ( :grin01: )there is a big difference between a sister and a girlfriend :grin01: . I usually don't like brown, it's too..... poopy. I can honestly say that brown looks great on him! I love his little head, great form! :) People usually don't like the surprise that there is more weight on the scale than they were hoping for, but in this case woohoo!

Well, I've strictly observed the distinction my whole life Jimmy, but these snakes have no morals. Sis, Mom, Daughter, Aunt Cornelia-- these snakes just don't care! ;)

is that a hypomelanistic house snake?
No, at least not in terms of carrying a single recessive gene for hypomelanism. They call this type "red phase". But clutches of house snake "normals" can have both red and brown phase hatchlings. In fact, his future mate is a brown phase from his clutch.

ah ok, cause in the uk, ive seen the normal phases and have seen hypomels and albinos advertised, the 'binos are stunning, its a very overlooked snake in my opinion

Every time I see them the white marks on their faces remind me of when spiders rest with their two anterior legs held together, like this. There's one in particular that tries to hide on grass blades and stems, and takes this habit to an extreme, but I can't remember which one that's called. If I ever get some of those I'm going to have to name them spider-related names.

I don't know about the hypos, but most albino house snakes are a different species than mine. Mine are brown house snakes, and I think most albinos are cape house snakes. You have to be careful buying house snakes for breeding purposes. There are many similar looking species and subspecies, and many are not interfertile.

Good lookers Dean...

I may need to get me a House snake. It took so long for then to reach the States. For a good book on them search out, Sun, Sand, and Snakes by Stephan Spawls.

I see what you mean. :) And I've seen the "extreme" ones that you mention, but I can't remember what they're called either.

I googled that book and read some descriptions and reviews. Sounds like a good read. I'll have to pick it up. Thanks for the reference. :)

I've been wondering if we were going to get an update on these soon. He's really coming along great, it's been cool watching them grow up. How long are they now?

One story from that book...

I'll try to be brief...
Stephan was on the lookout for Rock Pythons. The locals always helped. The area he lived in the farmers were growing sugarcane. It was grown as one giant bush, a clump if you will. Stephan, a helper and his sister (she was just getting into snakes) waded into some of this sugarcane after a python. Stephan grabbed the body of the snake. He could here the head coming back toward him but couldn't see it. He felt a sharp pain in his thigh; the snake had him. He screamed! His sister, thinking her brother had breathed his last, hurried into the cane. She grabbed the tail, the snake wrapped about two feet of that tail around her neck... and defecated. (She gave up snakes that day)
