Thanks Nanci, you should see this guy in person. He's got a bit of a mahogany tinge in his saddles

Yep, you can see the mohogany tint in the feeding pic. I spent five minutes seeing different things in his head pattern (gotta lay off the peyote). Suh-weeet P.I..

If you stare at that head pattern too long you'll end up like me! :eek1:
I'm still seeing the "torso-less angel" :shrugs:

So, since you seem to confuse me king name wise regularly.... I thought Florida king was L.g. floridana, just some king subspecies. Why you call it intergrade? I do vaguely remember something on 2 subspecies of king living in Florida, both being called Florida king, so is he an cross between those?

Sorry for the confusion Barbara. Florida Kings are problematic animals.
Breeders still use terms like brooksi and goini, but the fact is that most are intergrades with eastern kings. If you are a purist, the Florida King is definitely not for you. Magnum is an obvious Eastern/Florida intergrade, and most of my others are as well I'm sure. Years ago, the range of the Eastern King extended well into central Florida and the gene pool became polluted for lack of a better word. Of course, this is just one man's take on the whole thing, but I've seen the changes in the 35 yrs I've lived here. This is not a bad thing though, Easterns and Floridas are well suited to each other and the intergrading makes for some fine looking animals. I don't have anything that I consider pure, but Gene is the closest

No problem, I was merely joking hun ;) Thanks for the explanation. Around here I nly see animals like Gene being sold as Floridana's.

Have you heared of the Apalachicola king? It is Goini x Easter, right?

Yes, that is correct sort of. It's actually Eastern x Florida, however there is supposedly a patternless variety that some believe to be a distinct sub species IE: true Goini. We may never know, but there is a dude who has been studying this for 30+ years and hopefully he will shed some new light on the subject. His name is Bruce Means so keep an eye open

I will

Mey Mike...quick question. You have seen several of the pictures I've posted of my floridana. The eyes and face of Magnum look so strikingly similar to my Soleil...do you think my girl is an intergrade?

I know we discussed this before, and I think Dean mentioned that mine just looked "different"...have you an opinion?

Doesn't matter one bit to me. I love my floridana girl, intergrade or not. And your Magnum is a beautiful creature, for sure...

Well, since you asked, yes I do. First let me say that Soleil is a remarkable king. I wouldn't mind having her at all
Here is a picture by Dick Bartlett from Alan Tennant's Snakes of Florida book.
When I first saw Soleil, she reminded me of this snake, except for her being hypo of course

Yup....I would definitely have to agree with you on that one. That guy has the odd striping and "zig-zag" patterning of my girl for sure!!

As I said...that doesn't bother me one bit. I love her.

And you're Magnum is a beautiful little guy, too! He's got a face to die for!!
