NY Reptile Expo: Self Restraint

Kevin M

Corn Addict
I showed remarkable self restraint today and only spent $400! My wife will be so happy. Amoung my purchases was a 01 Miami het Crimson & a pair of 01 Anery Bull Snakes. (The Anery Bull Snakes are just amazing looking)

Once again, I hope to have a pictures up soon.

Anyone else goto the show? What'cha get?

I have a question... How big are these herp shows? Ive never gone to any of thses shows and I would like to... but is their alot of selections? and is it cheap? just wondering Im looking for a good deal for corns... Im really looking for some good corns with good prices...

Went to the Indy show today, and it's definitely NOT corn season yet.

I thought I showed amazing restraint as well...actually, no I didn't. There wasn't much there I was interested in. I just bought my 250 mice and 1000 crickets (for my bearded dragons, obviously) and went home. Had I wanted to buy a chicken, goat, sugar glider, and an armadillo, I would have been set. Not much for me in the snakey world, but the baby beardies and geckos were out in force.

Can't wait until it's corn season....rabbit season...no corn season.

lol

:p

Corny - The shows really vary from month to month and from state to state. The one here in NY is very crowded and has lots of vendors with all sorts of reptiles. You can get some real good deals if you get there early as most of the best stuff is gone FAST.

Hurley - Oh yeah. Its definitely not corn season. I think there were maybe 30 or 40 corns in the entire place. Most were adult males of various morphs. I missed out on a '01 blizzard that I wanted. I shoulda just bought it on the spot when I seen it. Next show here is July 21st. Should be ripe with hatclings! Oh Joy!

Hurley,

You must tell me more bout the armadillo's, I've always been fascinated by them, but I've never seen them kept as pets.

Unless you were being sarcastic and I missed it?!?!

Armadillo at the show.

Actually, no I was serious. Someone had an armadillo there. I have to admit I know next to nothing about them, so I am of no help, unfortunately.

The only thing I know about armadillos is that they are the only other mammal besides human beings that can carry the bacteria that causes leprosy. Not a lot of help.

Being from Texas I get to see a lot of Armadillos. They are strange little critters with a hard shell that obviously dosen't do much good when hit by a car. They're usualy spotted laying in the road in various locations throughout the rural areas.

I probably know more about them than most, I have done quite a bit of research on them! Very interesting animals. Here in Florida they are considered a nusance, digging up lawns in search of grubs. The sod feilds support them by the hundreds. I have just never heard of any one keeping them as pets. They are easy to catch, you can walk up on them with a fishing net. That's where the fun ends...If any one out there knows any more about them, Please let me know. I better get back to snakes....before Rich gets aggravated with all this waste of his forum space.

Just want to apologize in advance for posting non-Corn pics. But I finally got some pictures of my new Anery Bullsnakes and I want to show them off.

This is Ares:

NY Show and Armadillos ~~~~~:~

We went to the NY show in White Plains. It was our first show and we were pretty excited. We didn't purchase any corns or any snakes for that matter. I agree with Kevin, not a lot of corns and definitely not a lot of variety with the corns that were there. July should be better. We did get a lot of good deals on supplies and Spencer had his eye on a two week old python. I didn't say no, but he was worried that one more snake would be too much to care for so he declined, ok so my 13 year old has better restraint than me!

Two things I didn't like, someone brought a breeding (in action) pair that were on display and someone else brought a clutch of eggs that were hatching. I thought that this would be too stressful with all the activity going on for the snakes.

I had an armadillo as a pet when I was younger. It was the pits! They are nocturnal and very active. They get into everthing, knock things over, love to get into the garbage, fall up and down the stairs, dig things up. He wasn't mean but he was determined and relentless with his exploring and moving all over the house making tons of noise while everyone else was trying to sleep. I don't know what it would be like if you tried to restrain one in a cage, they just are in constant motion. I didn't notice the one at the show but I got there late, maybe it was sold by then. My two cents Sam ~~~~~~:~

Egad, A Python? I hope in the future your son realizes what he's getting into if he decides to get a python. I had to finally give in and give my python away when he reached 13feet and 30lbs in size... But I digress...

I didnt see any copulating snakes? They must have finished... As for the hatching snakes. You must be speaking about the 4 western hognoses that were on display hatching. I wasnt too thrilled about that myself, But I must admit 6 months ago the same guy had a clutch of Candy Canes on display hatching and I gave in and bought a pair (3 months later, not out of the egg) and they were fine.

<Rant Start>
And I have to go on record right now and point out how inept, rude & unknowledgable everyone at Regal Reptiles is. They don't know jack about anything theyre selling, They shy away from questions & more often than not their favorite line seems to be "I dont know, What you see is what you get" - If you really want to start a comical convo with them you can then ask them "Well then, What am I seeing?"
<Rant End>

Bull Snakes

Kevin, those are great looking. I really like Bulls I wish I had room for some. Good luck with them and enjoy.

:) Alicia

regal reptiles...

kevin,
i had the same type of experience with them at the january show. they wanted to sell me a pair of wild-caught "very tame" tiger rats (spilotes pullatus), but they didn't want to even put their hand in the cage to take them out. ( a tiger rat can put a nasty bite on you... not like a corn) needless to say i didn't purchase any tiger rats that day. :) ---jim

Thanks everyone. Earlier in the day I procrastinated too long and missed out on a pair of "Ghost" Bulls, So later when I seen these I just had to get them.

Very annoying isnt it, jim? It seems more and more there are rude uneducated vendors at these shows. I used to ignore it but at this last show I sure mouthed off alot. It isnt good for the trade & I wont stand for any of it anymore. But I wont rant further. heh

Now I'm sure it couldnt be the same tiger rats from the january show (or maybe it was?) But they had a trio of spilotes.p last Sunday. 2 were very dark, but 1 of them was a beauty with plenty of yellow. A friend of mine I was with was interested in them, But in the end he got a very docile male tiger from another vendor that was actually able to take the time to answer some questions & take out the snake for handling first.

Well now that's interesting~~~~~:~

I wonder if that wasn't that same booth that had the python Spencer was looking at, They told Spencer that it would only get to 3-4 feet which was the big draw for him. (To be able to say I have a python and to be able to manage it!) He has their business card, I'll have to check to see if it's the same guys. Spencer took some business cards but not ones from the people with the mating snake, things just didn't look quite right at that table. And yes it was the HOG Nose snakes that were hatching. The one thing that Spencer said when we were leaving was that by not buying the two week old python he would have time to research and make a good decision. Me? I just believed them when they said 3 - 4 feet. Sam ~~~~~~:~:(

could be the same...

might be the same ones kev. one was a real nice with lots of bright yellow, the other was fairly drab with some dirty yellow. both were about 5-6 footers. me? ...still waiting for a nice pair of fairly tame cb babies. ...along with the other 50 or so snakes i still want. lol have a good one :) ---jim

Hey I might have read too fast and missed the name of the type of python, but what species was it?
My friend has a ball python and I think she said it only gets to be about 4 feet. I guess you would have known if it had been a ball python though. Wouldn't it be funny if it had been a Burmese?? On further thought...that would actually not be very funny for the person who got suckered into buying it...

I'm not 100% sure, I could very well be thinking of the vendor next to him. But I think the vendor with the hatching hognose snakes was Hopyard Herps? See if Spencer has that business card. If so then i think we might have identified the correct vendor.

Also, Iris could be onto something here. If the vendor said they only get 4-6 feet than it could have very well been a ball python which doesnt grow very large. Or it could have been a children's python which is even smaller & max's at about 3 feet. (Plus their are dwarf version of retics available that I hear dont exceed 6 feet or so.) But who knows? I dont remember seeing any other pythons there other than burmese pythons. (Which can get utterly huge. 18-25ft or so)

jim - 5-6 feet Sounds about right. Though it's hard to tell since theyre such slender snakes and all coiled up. One thing is for sure other than the high yellow one (Which I didnt get to inspect closely) the other 2 were downright ugly.

On a sidenote, A friend of mine (Dr Randon Feinsod, DVM) is trying to breed his trio of spilotes for the first time this year. If he has any success I'll let you know. Perhaps we can finally get you a tame pair. :)

Ball Pythons...

I've had a couple Ball Pythons, and they're great snakes. Assuming they're CB, that is. :) They don't get too big, they are very tame, easy to care for (only a little more work than corns) and lots of interesting color variations. Oh, and the hatchlings are the cutest things I've ever seen. The only problem right now is that the morphs are all way too expensive.
