Sexing PLEASE REPLY

Livin life an loven corns
HI all
Can you tell the difference between a male and a female 14 in corn.If so can you please tell me how

Thanx
Zach:eek:

A 14" corn is still probably small enough to be sexed by "popping", ie, trying to manually evert the hemipenes of a male and the failure to do so in a female. However, this procedure is best done by someone with experience since a snake can be hurt if this procedure is done improperly. Using sexing probes on such a small snake can definately cause harm unless done by a very experience person. Their size at this time also makes using tail width just below the vent an extremely inaccurate method.

what about a 6 month old who is 21in. is there a way to tell its sex? the petstore said its most likely a male since it grew soo fast, but i have been calling it a she. it would be nice to know soo that i dont give her/him a personalily complex.

Growth rate has nothing to do with sex. If I was you I would put any advice that pet store gives you in the mental "trash pile" *L*

The only ways to sex corns are as follows:

Popping: Manually using your hands/fingers to get the sex organs to expose themselves. As they grow this becomes a non-options as snakes gain more and more control over the organs. Somewhat reliable although you could have a male NOT expose the organs and think its a female...

Probing: Inserting a probe, (a long thin metal tool) into the vent and counting the scales to see how deep you could insert it. But too small a snake can be harmed...even an old snake can be hurt by this if done by someone with no experience or little. Most reliable method aside from breeding *L*

Tail: Sometimes and only SOMETIMES you can tell a sex by a photo, or by looking at the tail. Males tales tend to be longer, and taper off further down...the stay the same width for longer towards the tip than females. Females have a shorter tail that starts tapering almost immediatly after the vent. Again this is NOT a 100% reliable method.

All three methods MUST be done with experience as non-experience can lead to problems with the snakes health.

Yep....nice snake..

I know its hard, but try getting a picture from underneath...a pane of glass, plexi glass for the snake to sit on...if not you can try manually turning the snake over and getting a photo from the vent down...the whole tail...underneath is the best way to make a guess....

a females tail will go more like a "V" to the tip right away...a males stays fatter further down...from the males vent the shape is more like "| |" longer until it starts thinning closer to the tail.

How old is your snake? Because to young and the tail pic thing is even less accurate.

ok well she isnt being very cooperative with the undershot and i dont want to force her to stay still. i took a good look at her. she is quite fat all the way to the vent then suddenly get skinny. there is a big difference is size suddenly at the vent. i hope she isnt fat. she is 6 months old. i'm gonna try to find something to put her on to take a pic, but i'm not likely to find something.

thanks for taking the time to help me out with her sex.

also, is she a normal corn or some other kind?

Personally, I think she is a normal. But corn genetics is my HUGE weak point. *l*

Anyways well she could be female...sure..but like I said take her to a local vet or reptile breeder and ask them to probe her then you will know for sure. I'd feel safe calling her a she though if it really gets than skinny after the vent. :)

well i'm reluctant to get her probed cause i dont want to stress her out. since i'm not looking to breed her, i guess it doesnt really matter. i was only curious. thanks

If I had to guess, I would guess it was a female. The tail is kinda short compared to the rest of her body and it tapers pretty quickly. If it were a male at that age and size you could probably tell also since it would have a much longer and wider tail that didn't taper much.
