Hrm the cool side of my tank is only 71*F

I know I've read all about the tempatures time and time again, but as to provide not such a large tempature change should I then aim for the low 80's on my hot side so that there's not a 15* difference? Or is the 15* difference ok?

I also had quite a difference between my warm and cool side, so I bought a low watt heating lamp to help even out the temperatures.
My warm side was originally warm enough, so the thermostat I have now prevents it from getting too warm, and the cool side is now within the right ranges as well.

Well it's one of those kritter keeper things, I don't think a heat lamp would work very well on one of those...

Corny,

Instead of a heat lamp a simple 40W incandescent bulb would work as well.

I wouldn’t recommend keeping it on 24 hours a day. It would disrupt your snakes circadian rhythm. With that said, your temperature will drop at night and any changes to the ambient air temperature would also have an effect.

However, it should do in a pinch. Are you planning on getting a more “permanent” enclosure in the future?

Regards,
Steve

I personally wouldn't worry about it. Mine have 85F warm hides, and the cool side varies with the room temp, but never falls below 65F. It's probably usually in the 70-80 range.

But I still find that using any sort of bulb in a lamp wouldn't work very well on one of those kritter keepers it doesn't seem like it would light it or heat it very well.
And yes this is only the home for my snake untill it is an adult...I don't plan on leaving it in a kritter keeper forever. I sure hope you don't think that the home I have for my young snake is anything less than sufficient, it has more floor space than a 10 gallon tank...

I wouldn't worry either, my cool side is normally around 70-74 sometimes as low as 68. None of my corns seem to have any problems with it.

I never thought that is was insufficient nor was it my intention to have others think that. I apologize for any confusion.

Steve

Sorry to have added to the confusion. It's so hard to have conversations with people without being face to face with them :D

Im Glad i came across this post. I have been wondering about my temps also. My warm side is mid 80's, cool side can get as low as high 60's. I guess thats fine then. I suppose the snake would move to the warm side if he was too cold anyway as long as there are hides in both the warm and cold areas of the tank.

Thanks for the info guys :grin01:

lol yea they did :grin01:

The wierd thing is i dont see my snakey in the warm side very often....he probs chills out there when im asleep in bed though as i always hear rustling once the light has gone out!!

Hes probs setting up a sun lounger and cracking open a beer over in the 'warm end', thats what all the rustling is when the lights go out :)

I let my snakes tell me what temperature they like. My house is usually at about 68-70, so the snakes get a gradient from 68-85. I let them figure out what they like and usually they sit on the coldest side of the tanks. I just trust they know what is best for themselves.

Totally agree, they are or atleast should be experts at thermoregulation!

i wouldnt worry about it like a few people have said if it gets too cold ur snake will simply go sit back in the warm side of there viv,

i think somtimes people underestimate how tough corn snakes are,
the cold side of rockys viv is around 70 and he spends most of his time there,
