How long can fuzzy's stay out the freezer

Hi all

I am up at my fiancee's at the moment which is about a 3 hour drive away from my house and i have run out of fuzzy's and need to buy some more.Problem is once i go home i am working 12 hour shifts and all shops are closed by the time i finish work and won't be able to get some at home.so basically i need to go to the shop and come back to my fiancee's house and put them in the freezer again which will leave them out for say 20 minutes and then the next day drive home with them which means they will be out of the freezer for 3 hours. Is this gonna be too long and make the fuzzy's go funny if so i will have to just leave work early one day.

Many thanks

You need an insulated cooler, some newspaper, and a block of dry ice. Put the fuzzies in a plastic bag, wrap the bag in newspaper, and then place the block of dry ice on top of them (wear gloves...it would help to also wrap the dry ice in newspaper for safety). This will keep your fuzzies frozen for quite a while.

To mooch off of this good topic idea, is there a certain amount of time that is ok for them out of the freezer?
I ask, because most times when I'm feeding my snake I'm probally going to be getting it from my job which is about 20 minutes away from my house. Will they be ok?

In the summer I just take an insulated picnic bag with some ice-packs in it to bring the mousicles home. seems to cope with the admittedly lower 'heatwave' temperatures here

Bringing freezer packs wouldn't really work for me though. Because I'll be working 6-9hrs if it happens to be feeding day on a day I'm working. Unless I store my freezer packs behind the feeders and the frozen fish food untill it's time to go home...hmmmm
Ok well on school days the freezer pack certainly won't work cause if I'm at class all day and stop by work (work is by my school) I will be sans cooler packs.

Take them in a small cooler, but use a chunk of dry ice instead of a regular freezer pack. Be sure to put a thick layer of newspaper between the plastic-wrapped mice and the dry ice so the mice don't get frost burn. Many grocery stores and butcher shops sell dry ice. It sounds like you work in a pet store...is that correct? See if they'll give you a chunk of dry ice from the frozen shipments on receiving day.

Yeah I work at petco, but I've gotta say I have yet to be there for the frozen shipment :/

Think they'd save you a piece? Tell 'em it's for a chemistry lab. hehehe Or ice bombs... :grin01: (kidding, of course)

Dry ice is pretty easy to obtain. If you can't get any from work, try the local meat market or grocery store. Dry ice is the only way to keep something frozen solid outside a freezer. It's fun to play with too. :)

If I ask them to store it for me does it need to be kept like...in the freezer or something? I am completely unaware of how the whole dry ice thing works.

Because that was part of the condition of being able to have my snake in the house.
No dead critters (for snakes) in the freezer. Hopefully after seeing how annoying it is my parents will relent, just like they did on the snake.

Ok, now I get it. That makes more sense. In that case, I think you may do best feeding live...buy one mouse at a time so there are never any dead critters in the freezer. (My parents were the same way. :) )

OR...if you really want to do F/T, then how about looking for one of those dorm-sized fridge-freezers for your room or the garage? You can get them at Home Depot, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, etc. You might even be able to find a used one on Craigslist or other local online ads.

How about a friend or a local herper? Maybe someone would let you keep your feeders in their freezer or just let you buy a couple from them on feeding days. If someone near me had a similar problem, I'd have no problem selling them a couple 20-cent mice every week or keeping their bag of feeders in my freezer.

And lastly, what about Petco? Will your manager not allow you to keep a small stock of feeders in the store freezer?

Those are just a few ideas. Hopefully you'll find something that works. :)

Well I don't think at this point in time I'm reading to invest in a fridge just to be convient for me and my snake XD The problem with live however then is...it's live and I'll have to invest my father once a week to smack the mouse up against the wall untill I get used to it...hell they might actually ban that in my house too XD
Sadly however I have no friends, nor do I know any of my neighbors after a year and a half to be able to ask them if I can store mice in their freezer XD
The only real problem with storing them in the work freezer is that it is out on the floor and not in the back, so the customers have access to pick out their own feeders so that we don't have to. So I would worry about buying a bulk back, labeling it and putting it in the back and then someone taking from my stock, cause I know everyone won't be watching the feeder freezer 24/7

I seen in a magazine once where somone made lil mouse sausages for snakes if im not mistaken it may have been mrs loves book may wana check into that technically it would still be a dead mouse but may be more bearable in sausage form ?

As long as you store them in a plastic baggie and not in their original packaging, which I believe states that they are ground up rodents. :puke01:

If your only going to be driving about 20 minutes with the frozen mouse I don't think you would have anything to worry about. I've had frozen pinks and fuzzies in the car for upto a half hour before I got them home with no ill effects at all. They were still frozen solid. The only time I wouldn't do that would be in the dead of summer when the temps in your car(if you needed to stop anywhere on the way home) would definately get to warm to keep the mice frozen, otherwise if you were driving straight home with them I wouldn't worry to much about it. Good Luck and hope this helps.

I don't think a 20 minute drive is a big deal, either. Just keep a freezer pack in the freezer at work, if you can. If not- you're going to be feeding them right away, anyway!

What if you got an ice cream container and emptied it out and stored your mice in that, in your freezer at home? Get a kind your parents hate! Just kidding...

Well cause the plan when getting home with the mousesicle anyway is to set it directly to thawing for my snake. So it's not like I'm just going to leave it sitting around or anything.
But yeah I'm hoping my parents eventually cave and let me keep it in our freezer (hell we've got two!) so that it's not a pain in the butt for me.

Also bustacapp, I know about the mouse sauages and actually there was a discussion by me awhile back, as I was still trying to convince my parents to even let the snake in the house. Unfortunatly they don't seem very easily atainable. That and my mom said she would kill me if she heated up a mouse sausage for my dad :sidestep:

The small dorm type fridges are prettyy cheap, new, I've seen them as low as $59 on sale. On craigslist you might be able to find one a lot cheaper.

But if you have 2 freezers, I don't see why they wouldn't let you keep a few mice in a well sealed airtight container. As long as it is not visible and marked so there are no accidents, what is the problem?

The whole restriction seems a bit strange to me. You can adopt an animal and take responsibility for it but you can't keep the food here?
