Thermostat issue and question...

Maize411

Hooked for life!!
Well since I got another snake..I bought another UTH..same one that is under Maize's tank..now for Maize's tank..I have a thermometer right on top of the glass where the UTH is..that thermometer is reading 81..now in the other snake's tank..I have a thermometer with a probe set under the substrate right on the glass where the UTH is..that thermometer is reading 85...now their both the same UTH coming from the same thermostat..why am I getting different readings? and which one is the right one?? can someone help me out here?

Maybe the gap between the glass and the UTH is different? Is the glass the same thickness in both vivs? Is the material the same underneath both UTH mats?

Take both temps with the same thermometer and see if it is the same.

If you have a digital thermostat in your home, compare the thermometer's reading to the thermostat, placing the thermometer as close to the thermostat as you can. The home thermostat should be accurate to within about two degrees.

What kind of thermometers are you using?

both vivariums are the exact same...I'm using the Repti-Therm500R for my thermostat...in Maize's tank..the thermometer I'm using in a digital thermometer usually used to tell the temp in the house..however..I laid it flat down on the glass right over the UTH so it gets the glass's reading..that one is reading 81...now the thermometer in Striker's tank has a probe with it..I stuck the probe under the substrate right over the UTH and that one is reading 84...the substrate is the same so it can't be that..and both the tanks are the same company tank...it really doesn't make much sense.. :shrugs:

The one laying down on top of the glass is taking an ambient temperature, which is a lower temperature than that of the glass. The one with the probe is reading the temperature of the glass directly at the probe.

The difference is in sensor location. Alot of "household" thermometers have several sensors, and they take an average reading. A probe takes a "spot" reading in one exact location.

Get a second probe thermometer, and I would bet your problem would be solved withint 1-2 degrees...

ah okay...well then...for now I will go by the fact that the thermometer with the probe is giving a more accurate reading...so I'm going to turn my thermostat down a bit..though 84 is in the good zone..I like to keep it at around 82..thank you for the advice..I didn't even think that the digital thermometer in Maize's tank had multiple sensors..thanks
