How to keep the mice frozen

I'm heavily contemplating ordering from rodentpro.com before my snake gets here but I'm not too sure if the parental unit would totally dig a hundred dead baby mice in her fridge.

So I checked up on a bunch of mini freezers (most which are fridge/freezer combos. :\) and they all cost in the 120-200 range and I just can't go that high. I was wondering if anyone here had any fun ways of keeping mice frozen that weren't in the conventional freezer or any places that carry cheap freezers?

Ummmm...none that I can think of. You could just keep buying dry ice over and over and over, but that would become cost prohibitive.

What I did when I was in HS and still lived at home was to just get a cardboard box and keep them in that in the freezer. This way my mom knew where they were, but never had to actually look at them and get all queezy. I then made sure I only took them out when she wasn't around. Try using this; it might be a good comprimise.

or if you got a sealable Tupperware bin and kept them air tight in that in the freezer.
Check for used appliances in your yellow pages or check your local classifieds for a used freezer. I've seen nice sized ones going for $20 or even free if you come pick them up.

mmm, my mu was totally against snakes and live mice. After 1 month, she was breeding mice for my snakes, still didn't want anything to do with my snake. But this year,...

I went away for 10 month studying abroad, and dad was going to look after the snakes. One got sick, and didn't want to eat anymore. Eventually, mum started force feeding my sick snake (after being with it at the vet offcourse). :crazy02:

So she went from, aaaahhh, no way I'm ever going to touch that, to, oooohhh their cute

What antster said. You can get a used freezer for cheap - cheaper than 100 frozen mice. Try a thrift store or used appliance store.

Check out your newspaper, craigslist.org, and other online classifieds for a used dorm-sized freezer. Also start hitting the yard sales. It is May and school is ending, so college students will be selling off tons of their dorm junk within the next few weeks. As far as the new freezers, $100 seems high at first but you'd be making a great investment. Constantly buying enough dry ice to keep mice frozen would add up to far over $100 in a very short time. Listening to your family gag and squeal and gripe every time they open the freezer isn't much fun either. When I was in HS and kept mealworms in my parents' fridge to feed to my sugar gliders, there were lots of times I'd have gladly forked over a hundred bucks just to get my mom to shut up about my "creepy animals".

My parents let me keep them in the freezer as long as they cant be seen (in a plastic bag). Maybe you should try this with you parents?

That's a good idea. If your mom will let you put them in the freezer, you could disguise them in popsicle molds! See, you take a stick and put the mouse on it, then stick in the mold. You could do 6 or 8 mice at a time. When your mom opens the freezer, she sees "popsicle mold" and hinks "MMMM, orange popsicle." But really it's a frozen mouse. When you need it, you just pop it out and you have a frozen mouse conveniently on a stick. Swish it around in warm water and serve it to your snake. You and your mom both win!

lol, that would work....at least until someone actually wanted a Popsicle, then you will have some explaining to do.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'll be scouring craigslist (ARE there mini freezers that are just freezers?) and talking to my mom about it closer to the 'due date' of my little girl.

Wahahaha... Popsicle mice. That's fun.

Those small dorm fridges have REALLY small freezers in them, so check it out before you buy anything.

Watch craigslist for a small chest type freezer, that would be better and have plenty of space for lots of frozen mice. I just bought one myself recently as my African soft furred rats are breeding so well my freezer was filling up.
