Right the viv is set up

It's all set up and i just have a few questions mainly about humidity as i have never had something that measured that before.

I have my heat mat on the left hand side inside the wooden viv and the thermo/humidity probe is right on top of the heat mat below the substrate and reading this.

temp drops to 80 at it's lowest and 83.2 highest and it is stayting at that.
humidity was in the 96% or so to start but now 83% but not sure if thats because it's buried.

on the cold side i have the probe just sitting on top of the substrate and the reading is this.

temp is just sitting bang on 74 and not moving
humidity is 66%

are these readings ok or should i change something.

also if these are ok when i added all the aspen is was quite dusty and what with it being a wooden tank i thought should i leave it to air for a day or so?

That sounds very high. 96% should be forming condensate on the tank walls.
I have two Brazilian Rainbow Boas who need humidity over 75% and it takes a bit of maintenance to keep that up, it would be pretty hard to get higher than 60% by accident. Feel the substrate with your hand, if it's damp then let it dry out. The only time a corn snake needs any humidity is at shedding time and unless you live in a dry house you probably don't even need to worry about that. If you really have 96% then you need to dry it out. Some people say dampness like that can lead to respiratory infections in corn snakes. The may be because of the risk of mold.
As for the aspen dust. I've never heard of it hurting a snake.

well it's not damp at all antsterr if anything its really dry.

As the aspen seemed dusty i left the viv glass open all night and when i woke up the humidity was 57% does that sound better,although not sure if it would go back up when i close the glass doors again.

also i have no water bowl in their yet or anything as my Snake is still in his old home so not sure if that will help a bit.

and as for temps is 79.8 to 84.2 fine temps warm side and 74 cold side although cold did drop to 72 early hours of the morning.

Your humidity still seems a bit high and I would suspect will go even higher once you introduce your water bowl and close the glass door again.

Are there any vents in your wooden enclosure? If not, I would recommend putting some in to allow for air circulation.

I feel that 84.2 is on the low side of what your warm side temperature should be. Warmer (within reason) is better when it comes to digesting a meal. Warmer and a high humidity however are not a good combination. I would get your humidity controlled first.

I run my UTH at 88 degrees “on the glass” on the warm side of my viv. Yeah, it’s a couple of degrees warmer than the recommended 86, but not warm enough to burn my snake, plus it gives me a substrate temperature of around 85 degrees. My UTH is of course regulated by a thermostat.

My cool side temperature is spot on at 75 degrees. I use the same thermostat (noted above) along with a ceramic heat emitter to control my cool side temperature.

From my experiences and from what I have read, adult corns do great between 80 and 85 on the warm end. I keep mine at around 81. That temp is measured where the snake resides (ie. in the aspen) not on the heating element. Hatchling corns should be kept at approximately 83-85, and I do my best to keep them in that range as well.

Right got home closed all the glass doors and waited and these are the results.

the probe that is above the heat mat and under the substrate is reading this
humidity - 33-35% and temp 81-85.6

and the probe at the cool end just laying on top of the substrate is reading this
humidity - 47% and temp sitting at 75.6

i am going to put his caves and water bowls in in a minute and do you think by the above readings he is ready to go in

the humidity actually ranges from 33-39 % on the warm side as the temp gets hotter

What kind of probe are you using? I use the $5 Wal Mart indoor/outdoor thermometers they sell at wal mart. They've got an indoor temp, outdoor temp, humidity reading on the base unit, and then a wire that leads to a probe. If you use that kind, the important thing (if you have the base outside of the cage anyway) is that the humidity reading comes from the base unit and not the probe. It should be obvious, but it took me awhile to actually realize that

And the one i bought it reads the humidity from the probe as i thought you needed to monitor what it was inside so i have to probs in my tank one which is under the substrate just above the uth and one that's just sitting on the substrate at the cool end.

Should you monitor the humidity from outside then :shrugs:
