Im STILL having thermostat issues. I have the probe under the substrate on the glass. The mat is plugged into the thermo, the thermo is plugged in and set to about 84. But the red heat light hasn't come on at all... is that ok? The glass does feel cooler now but I dunno... is it working?

how do i edit my damn post?!

nice set up....why don't you buy a digital thermomiter so you can be sure that it is working....if you have everything set up right then there is no prob..

Ive just bought a new heat mat and a thermostat i have to buy more?! Im a student! Ive got 2 thermomiters in there, not digital ones though.

Nice set up! That's an impressive climbing branch and a pretty snake too.

I keep my thermostats up at 87 to keep the houses above the substrate warmer, but that's just me. how you're doing it is fine, but setting the thermostat higher would get the light on hopefully, and maybe make you more comfortable at least, without hurting the snake. Hope the heating works out.

I'm wondering why you're keeping it on the floor. One of the major warnings on the UTH's is not keeping the tank on the floor.

regular stick on thermometers will only do so much, I use one for my cold side, but for my warm side I use a digitial probe thermometer because they're more accurate.

I feel your pain though, I'm a starving art student.

as long as its temporary, try raising the tank a bit, put a book under each end. this will allow air circulation. That could heat up too much and with no air circulating around the UTH, things could get out of control. but other than that, nice set up. Its that a grapevine branch? am thinking of getting some of those. My guys need some branches.

im still having issues with this thermostat. Ive got it on max, and the glass is now only just warm, the substrate and her heat caves are also cold and not as warm as they should be. The temp is only about 60-70. Whats going on?

Hi Chrome.

Are you measuring the temperature exactly where the stat sensor is on the floor, and not in the air above it? There will be a few degrees difference.

The basic setup looks fine (very nice, in fact - lucky Corn!), apart from it looks like the weight of the tank is resting on the mat - that might have damaged the mat, as you do need some kind of air circulation over the surface of it. I'm thinking that either the mat or stat aren't working properly for some reason. Unfortunately, you won't know unless you can take both away from the setup and replace them, which is more money. Do you know anyone you can borrow a spare from?

I'm in your neck of the woods. Did you get your kit/snake from Reptiles Plus in Southbourne? They're very helpful. Perhaps if you took them a photo of the setup and described the problem, they might be able to make some suggestions.

I got my corn from Reptiles Plus, the tank is from Ebay for £15, the rest is from Southern Aquatics who have just got new reptile section and get supplies from Reptiles Plus but are a little cheaper and nearer me!

Thanks for the advice, i will take the thermostat off for a while, see if the glass gets really hot again then I can suss out whats going on. Shall i prop the tank up on a book or two just to get some air flowing?

When I had my first corn's tank on a table I propped it up using two pieces of lumber. Books would work just as well.

I think getting some air space under their is important, so anything is fine. Some heating pads, at least in the states, come with 4 little rubber feet for the bottom of the tank. Those would just get stuck to the very corner of the tank, were the plastic covers the glass, if you know what I mean and that provides plenty of space for air circulation and to keep the heating pad from being crushed between the tank and the ground.

What I did for my viv is prop up each corner of the viv with 3 inch by 3 inch bathroom title thats about .3 inches tall. I put the heatmat ontop of a large square title and there is about .2 inches of clearance between the heatmat and the glass.

I need have the thermostat sensor directly on the glass along with the probe for my indoor outdoor thermometer. Cover up both sensors and the area around it with 2-3 inches of substrate.

Then start adjusting the thermostat little by little until the temps stay at 85 degrees. It may take several days to get the temperature just right.

Get one like that.

Dont worry if it feels warm/cold to the touch. Just focus on 85 degrees.

Are you using stick-on thermometers? Then the temperature is probably a LOT higher than they are telling you it is. I used them in my naivety as a new snake keeper, and when I switched to digital thermometers I discovered that my temps were nearly 15 degrees higher than I thought. :eek1:

I know expense is a pain, but I really recommend you get a digital thermometer.

Btw - don't go by touch as to how warm or cool the heat mat is. What feels lukewarm to you probably feels a lot hotter to your snake. My heatmat gives off about 85F, but I can barely tell it's on by touching it.

Forget the viv, your snakes pattern is awesome! His borders are incredible and while it might just be me, but his head pattern made me think of Falcor from The Never Ending Story.:shrugs:

yes, that is a stunning snake.
I use a laser thermometer, its so easy to use. You can test the temp of every part of your set up, from the hot side to the cool side the guard around the ceramic heaters to the temp of your heat mats even the temp of the water in the bowls. Totally recommended and one is enough no matter how many vivs you have.
