Snakes aren't for me I don't think. I think I made a mistake

Glock23

SMR SG Corn Snake "Rogue"
I think I made a big mistake. I don't have the time to take care of him I thought I had.

I'm seriously thinking about selling him and all my viv supplys.

You all have seen my viv and the snake.. What do you think a fair price is?

My mind IS made up.

I got so excited about snakes and thought it would be cool but really i don't have the time or money or anything else. hell I hate the feel of the litte ***

None of us know the exact cost you have put into your set up plus the snake. I recommend you try sell the set for just a little less than what you paid for it all...Unless you got alot of bad deals and paid too much...Then make it all reasonable for a buyer.

It is a shame that having a snake was not pleasurable for you, but I for one appreciate your knowing its just not something you are going to take the time to deal with, and are thus going to let the snake go elsewhere to someone who wants it and will enjoy it. Get Rogue to a good home. These animals deserve to be cared for.

Regards

That's too bad. You have a gorgeous snake too. But do what's best for it. Rogue needs to be cared for.
I'm not sure about the pricing. Maybe if you find someone interested ya'll can make a deal.

So sorry that it didn't work out for you, but much respect that you have the courage to admit it.

I'd suggest maybe offering the whole setup at 10% or 20% less than you bought it for, or maybe just invite "offers over $xxx"?

You'll inevitably lose money I'm afraid, but hopefully it'll be worth it for you to know that the snake is going to a good home.

I'm sorry to hear they're not for you, but I'm glad that you acknowledge that fact. Better than neglecting the poor guy, for sure. :)

Me, I'm just the opposite -- I'm already feeling the Snake addiction.

Good luck on the sell.

thanks all I wish i had more time.. I just started guarding a national monument and I don't have any spare time like I thought I'd have. :shrugs:

I'll be the jerk...

How much time does a single snake take up? I have over sixty, and it doesn't take up all my time, and I could definitely do things more efficiently if I had to. Your snake should take up about 1.5 hours of time per month, including handling (which I hardly do). I have a more-than-full-time job, with 24x7 support coverage, which is liberally used by the unit I support.

What's the real reason?

I totally agree... All you need to do is feed him once 5-7 days and handling is optional. (but why not?)

Whats the real reason? Is it the snakes temperament?

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Roy Munson again.

Here's your real reason I think:

Being irresponsible by trying to take care of an animal that repulses you because you "thought it would be cool"

I don't regret being a jerk. It's unreal how many "I took care of this reptile for a month and now I don't want it anymore so I want you to take it" phone calls I have to field every week. It makes me sick.

I'm still curious.

Me too. And I wouldn't want this thread to give prospective snake owners the impression that they're time-consuming pets--or expensive ones. After the initial setup, what is there to spend money on other than mice and maybe some fresh aspen once in a while? And as long as the temps are stable, and the snake is given food and water, what is there to deal with? I probably spend more time shaving every week than taking care of the snake. I understand that new snake owners often have anxieties about getting everything right, making sure sheds happen properly, avoiding regurges, etc.--but after a few weeks one quickly realizes that such hand wringing is largely unwarranted. One wants to be careful, of course--but I can't imagine a better pet for someone with a busy schedule. If the snake is doing okay, maybe you just need to try not to worry about it so much. Or you could take your cue from Roy (and myself, for that matter) and combine your husbandry activities with cocktail hour. Can't hurt--if fact there's very little pain whatsoever.

This post makes me sad. He was so excited, getting him all set up- the initial pics, then what happened?? :shrugs: I feel bad for Rogue. No one seemed more prepared and excited about getting their first snake.

:-offtopic Wow.. there is a joke here but I shouldn't go there. :sidestep:

But Dean, you are right, one snake isn't anything. What is it to check the water, feed and change litter once a week? :shrugs:

There's a lesson for us all in this somewhere. I have long espoused that the nurturing of newbies is essential. Any hobby depends on a constant influx of people. One study the AKC did found that only about 90 percent of stayed in the dog game longer than five years.

I find this forum does a pretty good job of nurturing, but I would like to see more opportunities for people to get together and share their interest in snakes. There isn't a herp society in my area and I live in a metropolitan area of over 1,000,000.

I would like to see competitive events (Best in Show Snake). If they can show guinea pigs, we ought to be able to show corn snakes at the county fair.

We need a national herp society, akin to the AKC to promote snake ownership. Snakes are the perfect 21st century pet. They are silent, take up very little room, are very inexpensive to acquire and maintain and, as Dean pointed out, take very little of our time. And, yes, they are way cool.

Finally, it doesn't take a genius to see that most people take up a hobby because they want to belong to some group, somewhere. Our hobby's survival is directly related to the extent we make people welcome.

If I recall correctly, there have been other threads from Glock23 about his fear of being bitten. Perhaps it was worse than he realized.

It is sort of strange since there are recent posts from him about how much he loved his snake and even wanted to get a ball python.

I agree that time constraints shouldn't really be an issue, corn snakes are about the least labor intensive pets you can have. What other pet do you only have to really deal with once a week?
I these were a vicious pet but easy to care for but Mine died though.

This is a shame. But also a little strange. You were so excited about Rogue ("I'm a proud owner!") and you even wanted a ball python AND another corn. I don't know that time would be it... my two snakes take practically no time at all, and I work full time and have much more demanding animals in my care in addition.

Like everyone else... I'm just a tad curious. Maybe something's put you off, did Rogue bite you or something? :) Oh well - whatever the reasons - good luck finding a new home for Rogue. It's a shame that this wonderful hobby is not for you.
