I weighted Anubis yesterday and.....

Hey ev1.
I weighted my snake yesterday and he is 9 grams. Not excatly sure on the measurements but around 14 inches. I was told in the pet shop he is only a couple months old. Does this sound about right?

Maize is also a little over a foot and about 4-5 months old...I weighed her today and she was 19 grams...I dunno..maybe all snakes are different..

Yeah, that could be right. He was probably just on a maintenance diet, so is still basically newborn size, but as long as he eats well, he should put on some weight in no time.

Wow, he's a little guy! Yes, he should be on five days/single pink for sure. What a teeny baby! (Inez was 12g when I got her- her nickname was Devil Worm for a long time.) (Six months later she's 44 grams. She doesn't eat when she's blue, and she sheds once a month. They grow fast!)

I am nervous bout his first shed. He isn't in blue yet. At least i dont' think so. I don't really know what to look for. His eyes are dark color.

There's nothing to be nervous about! The first thing I notice is snakes that are usually out at some point during the day aren't out. I'll think, hey, I didn't see Choco last night. Then when I check on him, he'll be blue. Blue means the eyes usually are a fairly light blue color, the belly is light gray or blue, and the whole snake is sort of dull. This lasts about a week. Then, it all clears up and the snake looks normal, with clear eyes, and you think you've missed the shed, because you can't find the shed skin, but you haven't! The snake sheds within 48 hours of turning clear.

You can try to feed him when he's blue- it won't hurt anything. Either he'll eat eagerly, or just not be interested. Once you find out, then you know what to do next time. Some of mine eat when blue- most I don't bother.

It's ok to handle him when he's blue, but I think it's more respectful not to. At this time, a snake naturally hides because his defenses are lowered. Their instinct is to hid away until it's time to shed.

Once you know he's blue, you can make a moist hide for him, which he may or may not use. You can lightly mist the inside of his viv to keep the humidity up. After the first shed, you'll have a better idea of what the humidity level is going to be like, and if he sheds ok, or if you need to take stronger humidity control measures next time. If he doesn't shed completely, don't panic- someone will be here to give you advice.

I would get the tail part off ASAP- but a day's delay while you gather instructions isn't going to hurt anything. The body- asap- it's not hard to get off- eye caps- I don't have any experience with. But I know snakes retain them from shed to shed, so I would think you'd have a couple days to find out what to do. I think as long as you supply the correct humidity, it's pretty rare to have shedding problems. I've only had to intervene once, ever.

The main thing I always check first is the tail. My one corn that I got as an adult has a small stubby end on his tail tip from a careless previous owner not getting the shed completely off.
