Breeding mice vs Rats

Eating the young can happen in both species, scooby. It's quite often a one-off for first-time mothers, but is more likely if they are disturbed, or if there isn't enough protein in their diet.

It does happen in both BUT it tends to happen ALOT less often with Rats. As Janine said, it usually only happens when its a first litter or when the animals are not getting enough protein in their diet.

Breeding mice vs rats depends on your personal needs. I am currently breeding both (but more mice than rats) as I have very small corns as well as near adults. A word of warning though, some corns will NOT eat rats unless they have been introduced to the "rattie" smell from when they are young (ie, from when they are big enough to eat rat pinks). My adult corn flat out refuses to eat rats in any form! Even live and I know that a friend of mine has the same problems with his corns.

oh really? My adult corn loves to chopm down Rats!!!

Rats need a lot more space, and grow too large for corn snakes quite quickly.
I personally have a much harder time euthanizing rats than I do mice or African soft furred rats. Domestic rats are just so tame and friendly that I prefer not to use them as a main source of feeders.

The only known cases I've had of eating young is with mice, and that only with one female over a year ago.

In general rats will only eat young if they are in VERY poor condition or if the babies are still born.

albinoscooby my one big guy eats ANYTHING so he munchs on rat fuzzies no problem but my BIG one flat out refuses to eat anything other than mice! lol

Flagg, I agree with you there. I cannot euthanaze or destroy anything bigger than a big rat fuzzy. They are so much more intelligent and nicer than mice! lol I usually kill most of the pinks and leave a few for the mom to raise. These I sell to the petshop or to other snake people in my area. I don't mind if they get eaten, just don't want to kill them myself when they are that size already!
