Tort Pen Part Eight: Mr. Toad's Pool Party!

Nanci

The torts were already asleep when I completed their pool, but Mr. Toad volunteered to model. He's going to move out with them- he says he doesn't feel comfortable sharing a viv with Choco...Eventually there will be solar lights, so he'll have a nice supply of bugs.

Another view. This is really rough- there will be lots more plants and the ground will be either stones or mulch instead of mud, but I wanted to get the trees in the ground.

Nanci, aren't you worried about predators picking off Mr. Toad? Or messing with your tortoises?

I think the security system is step nine. ;) :grin01:

Looking great, Nanci!

I saw those marine toads on ks.com for $100- I'd sure like to have one of those! I _think_ there's a toad living under my house- I can hear somebody singing under there in the evening. I think Mr. Toad will be safe from predators unless a snake gets in there. The pool is so small and shallow because tortoises can't swim at all. The boxies' pool is the same size, and they go in it all the time.

Coyote urine is a general varmint/predator repellent. I made the mistake of smelling the bottle- YUCK!!! Why did I do that?? :puke01:

What about birds from above?

The pool looks awesome though Nanci! Will the torts and Mr. Toad mind each other?

You did such a good job! Mr Toad is so cute, in that last closeup of him, he looks like he's thinking "You want to take my picture? PAY ME"!! :grin01:
As for smelling the coyote urine....I guess its just one of those things you've gotta do when you're holding a bottle of it !! Curiosity sucks sometimes! :headbang:

You've done an amazing job on the enclosure, Nanci!

You ought to hear me talk about you to all my friends at work. I even bring them to my computer to show them this amazing Tort pen that 'some lady in Florida built". :D

Mr. Toad, who was originally used for scenting mice to try to get Addy to eat mice, retired from scenting, but by then I was (of course) really attached to him. I put him in with the torts, and he's lived there for about six or seven months. They run on opposite schedules. When they are out during the day, he usually sits on top of one or the other of their hides. He even basks under their heat lamp. When it gets dark, the torts are asleep and Mr. Toad comes out and sits in their tiny creme brulee water dish for a lot of the night. I feed him in a feeding container, because the torts viv doesn't have a lid.

The torts are too big for crows, and I don't have any resident hawks, plus they'll be under cover most of the day.

Whew, glad I had a few more sips of espresso... With one eye closed and the other squinting, I saw a buried bedpan in mud... Now it looks much cooler  It's coming along great! Can't wait to see it when it's done and growing in...

Thanks Dean (and everyone!) It's such a fun project. I love Mr. Toad- he does the funniest things. I love how I can feed him just like a snake, instead of having a viv full of stinky crickets. The coolest thing he does is if you pet him on one side, he leans way over that way. Then you pet him on the other side, and he leans the oppposite way. I almost released him in the pen last night, but I still have a lot of digging to do, and wouldn't want to shovel him by accident. I originally planned on having him move in with the boxies, but the tort pen turned out a lot lusher than I thought (as opposed to desert-y) so I think he'll like it more there.

Well, he originally came from in my yard, so if he escapes, I guess he's earned his freedom!

Joe- bedpan- nice! Now I'm going to have a complex...
