eyes opened or shut? I just got mine & he is always hiding, well I made his house a jungle & put a background scene so he feels secure. Now I can't see him during the day when he is sleeping & sometimes he will be up in a vine & I still can't see if his eyes are shut or opened. lol
If they do shut their eyes, does anyone have a pic of this. I am curious to see it.

Thanks for reading my goofy question...

They find a dark place and sleep. You really don't need eyelids if there's no light.

They have their eyes open all the time, whether awake or asleep. They can never close them.

Where mammals have eyelids and can blink and close them to protect their eyes, snakes' eyes are protected by a transparent scale - sometimes known as a lens or an eyecap. These come off every time they shed, so they go blind for a few days before each shed. This is because a layer of fluid forms under the lens and over the eye, to make sure it sheds cleanly.

When your Corn sheds, you should check the shed skin to make sure that each of the eye scales has come off, otherwise this can cause them eyesight problems.

Hope that helps!

Just as with people (& other animals) ... their body functions, &/or metabolism, slows... but they do not have REM sleep.;)
Even people can sleep with their eyes open but it will be rather uncomfortable, upon awakening, because the eye/s will be "dry", have a "gritty" feeling, etc.... Snakes do not have this problem because, while they do not have eye lids nor tears, they do have a, clear, protective scale (aka: spectacle, eye cap) over each eye.:)

Thanks you guys! I guess one reason I was curious, is I did not want to wake him up. I know I get cranky if I'm awakened. kwim? So 'Little Dani' stays hidden all the time. Or at least I have no idea what he does during the night. I do know he comes out of his den b/c he uses the bathroom in the same spot & its across on the other side of his 10gal tank.
We also do not bring him out til its dark, but when I have to go drag him out he looks like he was all comfortable & sleeping....
Please bare w/ me I am still learning.

It's rather hard to tell when a snake is actually sleeping, and chances are by the time you get there if he was asleep he's been woken by the vibrations of you walking up and opening the enclosure. I've heard reports that if you can see their eyes without disturbing them and you move a finger past you'll notice that the eyes won't track it if they're asleep, then if you wake them up you'll see the eyes begin tracking again. Don't worry about disturbing him to much though, he's got all day to sleep and all night to creep around, you handling him for a while each day isn't a problem. proided of course he hasn't eaten within the last 24 hours.
