In another thread someone said that one of the reasons for wanting to get rid of their snake was because their apartment smelled bad from the snake?

I don't have any smell problems. I remove pooh when I see it and there's a mild "aspen-ish" smell when I stick my nose in to the tank.

Does anyone have any smell issues with their snakes vivs if they are kept clean and pooh free?

When you have multiple snakes in a room, is there a smell? If so, from what? Pooh?
 
There is a scent to snakes and you'll notice it more when there is a large number in a room. Mostly the poop smells, but if you clean it up right away, it usually isn't too bad. I usually keep my window in the snake room open during the summer and it keeps the air fresh that way.
 
I have one snake (Jake) that when he musks (which is just a smell, nothing comes out!!) smells like green peppers or apples. His viv sort of smells like that. It smells good. Everyone else just smells like aspen. I like the smell of snakes.

Can't say I've ever smelled Eddy or his viv, but we have mice and guinea pigs as pets. Surely the snake can't stink worse than all them! :shrugs:
 
I don't notice a smell coming from Nike's viv at all... And I don't think I've ever noticed a smell when I'm over at someone else's place who has multiple snakes!
 
I don't have the good fortune of a window in the snake room, however, I use aspen bedding and I believe the aspen is sort of a natural air freshener. I also bought a air cleaner (unscented) made by Febreeze... I found it at Wal-Mart for only about $15. I have found if I leave it turned off for a day or two, I can start smelling stuff. But when it's on, all I smell is aspen, so it really works!

Like everyone says clean up the pooh and no smell.
No problems really apart from when one of the snakes poohs on the warm end of the viv and you wake to your room smelling like a Pub toilet.
 
Neither my snakes nor I are under any illusions. We know our s*** stinks!That's why we make an effort to get rid of it as soon as it appears.

My snake room is my bedroom, and it doesn't smell bad at all, I only have four animals so it's very easy for me to keep their cages and my air clean! :crazy02:
 
I too find aspen is a bit of a natural air freshener.

As I come closer to having collected all the needed supplies for my bioactive enclosure, I have been doing moisture experiments with different substrates.

I left coco peat in a covered bowl for 2 weeks and am trying to grow mold on it. So far, nothing and it smells as fresh as the day I put it in there. In the book, "The Art of Keeping Snakes," he talks about adding peat to the potting soil mixture and it's obvious why.

While there is much positive feedback on aspen, I wonder if maybe cocopeat AKA ecoearth, could be used with equally good results, when used "properly" and with attention to general enclosure hygiene.

Anyone here use straight peat?
 
Stinky snakes? Hm.

When, out of curiosity, I've sniffed Toulouse (yeah, I'm weird sometimes) he smells faintly earthy, but it's nothing repulsive. Plus I always check for poo and spot clean when I find it, so really no smell there.

I also have switched from aspen to hemp bedding, since I find it doesn't dry out the atmosphere quite as much, and there's less dust.
 
I use shredded cyprus which is similar to forest floor bedding for the green tree pythons, but I use aspen for the cornsnakes. I've used bed a beast, coconut husk etc. It make finding the poop difficult and it's messy. The snakes tend to end up with it all over themselves if they burrow in it. I do use it in nesting boxes with the females.
 
I can smell snake from time to time in my place, usually when I just walk in. I live in a 2 bedroom basement suite with the snakes, mostly in one big rack, all in one room. I think it's the corn snakes more than the boas or the python. I spot clean but the white powder part of the poop doesn't always all get picked up. I think that's the stinky part.
 
Earthy!! That is what I smell! Love the term :) , I read this thread last night & I knew I could smell something that was different yet not smelly (like my male 2yr. old duth bunnies).
I use the carebedding in white & love it so far. We have only had him for 3.5wks. So we shall see how it goes..
