Short and Sweet
I don't know if this is in the right spot - but I'm very upset - my new baby snake is in such a bad spot - I woke up this morning, and I had given him a hide made out of an old shoe box - and I didn't take off the label - and somehow he got it off and is all wrapped up in it! He's so upset, and I don't want to just pull it off, it looks like it might really hurt him and take some scales off.. I'm soaking him in water to try and make it loose.... I'm such a bad mom! Any advice???????

I'm so scared!

Its one of those stupid clear labels - its really strong, almost like tape... its stuck to him so strongly! He's so upset, he bit me... which is understandable. Has anyone had tape get stuck to a snake? Or something like it?

Ok I read somewhere online that veggie oil will help remove the tape - is this true? Is anyone out there?

Ok I got it off - the veggie oil worked and other then being stressed he seems to be ok! I'm just going to let him be for a long time! I'm sorry I paniced and posted so many times!

I'd try vegetable oil, or peanut butter. Maybe before that, put him in a shallow dish, with a cover, with room temp water, with a washcloth to crawl in, shallow water, and let him soak for 20 minutes and see if that loosens it up.

If you have someone to help you I would cut as much of it away with scissors as you can to prevent further entanglement.

Vegetable oil might work, though I can’t say I’ve ever tried it, but 70% isopropyl alcohol should work. Take care not to get it near your snakes head. I know it removes sticky band-aid residue quite well :)

I hope this helps.

Steve

We use alcohol wipes to take sticky tape off patients at work, but I hesitated to suggest it for a snake...

Thanks guys - One more quick question - he crawled into an old t-shirt of mine, is this ok to use as a hide for a while (not perm) He really doesn't want to come out of it, and I can't blame him! Also, is it ok to just let the veggie oil dry up on him or do I need to rise it off?

I would just wipe him with a paper towel to remove the veg oil. You don't want stuff sticking to him if he's all greasy. Yes it's ok for him to stay in the shirt. Glad you got the label off. This is why they say no tape in the viv!! (Because they'll find it!)

As long as you take it out once it becomes spoiled I don't see why you could not let him use your shirt as a hide. I have heard of people using them so that their snakes can get used to their smell, if he wants to stay there let him it might help him relax.

From now now you might want to soak any tub like thing you get in hot water (with or without oil is up to you) to insure that all the labels are off so you dont run into this again.

I'm glad that everything ended up ok.

Thanks guys! I really learned my lesson - I didn't even think about the label - it wasn't loose or anything - very stuck to the box, so I can't imagine how he got into it! I will soak anything i use from now on... thank you so much! You guys are a great help! I'm glad the t-shirt is ok...

Nanci,

Without knowing just how sticky the tape was, I wasn't sure if vegetable oil would work. Alcohol I know would, but care obviously would need to be used.

All's well that end's well.

Thanks Nanci!!!

The first corn snake cage I ever set up I sealed a hole in the lid with *shudder* electrical tape. Yeah, the next day I spent half and hour unsticking a 10 inch snake from about 10 inches of electrical tap. It was pretty ugly, his jaw was over at 45° from his head. He was okay in the end, thank goodness for olive oil. Anyway, at least you know what not to do again.

yes thank goodness for oil! Well its good to know I'm not the only person out there who has made this mistake! Thanks so much everyone!

Wow....Thats a horror story if I can ever thing of one. Someone suggested I tape the crack in my tank...I do not think I will take that advice now......I was hesitant about it in the first place anyways.

What can you use then to seal off a crack. Silicone?

Yep, just make sure it's 100% silicone, not latex caulk. Let it cure for 24-48 hours before using the viv.

Silicone adhesive is great stuff. When it dries it's almost completely inert, so I think it's safe to use inside a viv. Wait at least 24 hours and until you can't smell it anymore. I recently used it to build some hides out of flat pieces of river rock. Of course, I've yet to see Slithers inside of one but he crawls over the top fairly often.
