I got fired from my first job today

I'm not really upset that I was fired because I was thinking about quitting anyways, just the way my boss went about doing it. First, it was over the phone, that to me shows weakness. I like talking to people in person, face to face. Second, he did not really give a reason other then I could not work enough. I'm a part-time worker so I'm not supposed to work that much and I still live under my mother's roof so when she says we are going somewhere I can't say no. Third, he di dnot say "You're fired" he just said that he needs someone who can work more hours. I knew what he was saying but still...

I'm going to miss the work not the people, I learned a lot there. I loved working with the dogs and cats and even the people where not that bad at times. So yeah, not really the people I'm going to miss just the work it's self.

So now I have to start once again looking for a job, I'm thinking of working at another vet office that is near by. I was making $8.50 so I would like to match it but I could live with less. I'm not really sure what to think about it all. Should I be upset? Happy? Sad?

So yeah thats my mini rantish thing.

making $8.50 at your first job is pretty good. Off to a good start. My first job was at an amusment park for like $5.50? lol

Hey,Atleast you didn't do anything wrong, just couldn't work all the hours they needed you to.You also seem to have a mature attitude about it.At 17 I would have said "YAAAHOOOO!!!,more time to go fishing"Don't worry kid,you got the rest of your life to work. :sobstory: <sorry had to put that there to tease you a little, maybe make you laugh about the whole deal!!!

It's not like you were fired, more like "let go" so they could get someone who could work more! Still- it's a sucky feeling, getting fired. It's like, "You can't fire me, I quit!!" My job before this was like that- I HATED it, and was going to quit as soon as I found another job, but my hatred for the management was apparently too obvious, so they sneakily fired me- sent a co-worker to my house to tell me and take away my company van...Weasels! But I'm really happy at the replacement job. I don't even list that one in my resume- they have ceased to exist. Good luck finding the next job!

Unfortunately there are too many employers without any real work ethics. I'm on my way out of my current job...been working there for over 9 years, NEVER called in sick, always on time, work my BUTT off every day, do work at home on my own time, correct/cover for the inadequacies of the other 8 employees, and then get disciplinary actions taken against me because I'm slightly stressed and I upset the other employees when I tell them they need to do something. I've been home all week after having been sent home for a week without pay. Next step is being fired. I really want them to do that as I really wish to be able to just walk out of there, knowing that no one has a clue about how to do many of the jobs I've been doing for them these past 9 years. And I'll refuse to tell them...let them figure things out on their own for a change. I'm not irreplaceable, but it's going to "hurt" for a long time having me gone. Let the boss' wife's little "pets" do some actual work and they won't be so perky and butt-kissing after awhile. And let it REALLY get them where it hurts the most...financially. When they can no longer see a client literally every 5 minutes because the "diva techs" can't work fast enough, when half the charges not even make it on the invoice anymore, and when the best deals for the products we purchase can't be found, I'll be sitting at home grinning like the Cheshire cat, debating upon calling OSHA and the USDA about all the little things I know about.

Sorry to throw in my own rant on top of yours, but welcome to the world of veterinary medicine. Not at all what you would think. Yes, there are some good places to work, but all it takes is one money-hungry spouse to make a workplace into a living Hell.

Yea, I'm glad it's all over though. I'll find another job and move on with my life. I'm not trying to have a job that I have to work my life away at, I'm still young and I want to have some fun.

I don't mind the extra rants, I know I'm not alone!

The more I think about it the less I want to work at another vet office. I might try for a job at a pet store, I'm sure the fact that I worked at a vet office should help me get a job. Plus then I'll be able to pass my knowledge on to other people rather then just standing there and not being able to share what I know. What do you guys think?

A pet shop sounds like a good idea. You may actually be able to do some good there. From all the horror stories you hear about the misinformation given by pet shop employees, knowing that there is someone with at least an ounce of intelligence working at a pet shop ignites a little spark of hope...until the powers that be decide you aren't selling enough non-essential supplies to suit their expense accounts.

Gee...am I a tad cynical today or what. Pay no never mind to me! I'll help hubby with his insurance sales to increase his sales figures, and then I get to work at home until I retire!

But really, working at a pet shop sounds like a great idea. I'm actually considering applying for a position at the new Pet Supermarket that opened locally. I looked it over...once, and was terribly disappointed. Their reptile section was all of 3 shelves in a back corner.

Could be the fresh start that you never look back from. Remember, a wise man once said, the vast majority of people spend too much time working for other people to make any money.

As a boss I've had to let a few people go, and there is a code of ethics a good boss uses when letting someone go. I see from the above, that there's an attendence problem, as I'm sure when your mother says "you're going somewhere", you probably call off with little notice, on top of the few part time hours you put in. I would have had a one on one to discuss this. I would have you commit to a set number of hours, and explain to your mother that these are the days and hours you commited to work, and that is what is expected of you to keep your job. I would also have you sign a warning, even just to show your mom that your employer is taking it serious. Seeing how that it's too late now, you might want to have a talk with your mom about how that affects your income, and possibly the loss of another job in the future... On the bright side, you're young and will probably have a few more jobs before you settle in on a career... In the mean time, enjoy part time work, living at home, and the free time you have now...

It happens more than you would think, NFS07. My "First" job, lasted 3 days. I never did anything wrong, she had put me in charge pretty much the first day I was there. And I never showed up late. She called me one day, and told me I wasnt a "good enough fit for her store." So she pretty much fired me on personal reasons, rather than for the work I was doing. I later found out that one of my co-workers who was there when I got hired, had quit not to long after that, claiming the manager was a bitch, and they didnt get along. haha.

My suggestion is, you're 17. I wouldnt worry TOO much about money. Get a job you enjoy!
