I noticed this beauty while I was out on the patio last night, and rushed in to get my camera. There was a breeze, so I had to hold the palm still with one hand, while trying not to spook her, and shoot with the other. I got one great pic.

She stayed around while I made grilled lamb. When I would speak to her, she would turn her head in an interested but sort of menacing way.

Out of seven shots, her head was only in focus in one...A tripod would help- but with spur of the moment live action shots...I don't know. Is it practical?

You gotta buy them over here/ :shrugs:

Those are some great close up shots! We get them around here once in a while but the last one I saw was 2 years ago and we never did get any nice pics of it! These are one of the few bugs I like and am willing to get up close and personal with!

Nice macro shots! I love Mantis, but haven't seen one in ages...

Warning, once you start using a tripod, you'll want to take it everywhere, so get a light one that's still sturdy...For a couple bucks you can get a water bottle tripod mount at Walmart. It's basically a tripod head with a rubber cap bottom that slides over the bottle cap. Depending on how heavy your camera is, it may be practical just to keep in your camera bag... but it's only as high as the bottle, so you have to set it on table tops or other flat surfaces to get some height... I bought a walking stick that it fit on, so I could use it where they don't allow you to use tripods... like the butterfly house in Gainsville...
