hey guy sorry for all the questions i just want my snake once ive got it to have the best life u see

but can you tell me what else i will need with all of these to get me going:

24" vivarium
aspen substrate
2 x hides
water dish
heat mat (to cover 1/2 the viv)
thermostat
digital thermometer
hygrometer

That's pretty much it. You may not really need the hygrometer; cornsnakes tend to thrive very well at just "normal" humidity. But if your place is especially dry then maybe you might need it.

The other thing is if you wanted to spruce up you could add some decorations like some silk plants; but that is purely for looks. In the racks I don't do this, but in my display vivs I like to have them look pretty nice.

The only thing I would question is the heat mat to cover 1/2 the viv, that may not give room for a gradient of temp. Things like heat cable and heat tape don't cover half the tank. So usually one side or back is the warmest 80-85 with a more gradual decrease in temp. just my .02, susan

Susan's right. If you're going to use a heatmat, you need one that only covers one-third of the floor area in order to give the right heat gradient from warm to cool.

Personally, I put as many hides in as I can fit. Cork bark, earthenware flowerpots (upside down with the drainage hole widened) and plastic foliage look naturalistic, but you can improvise with all sorts of carboard boxes (they'll be disposable when they inevtiably get pooped on!). The more ground cover you have, the more secure the Corn will feel when it's moving about. If you aim to give it enough cover to move from one end of the viv to the other without being seen, he's likely to settle in faster and not be so spooked by the general movement around his new home.

Other than that, I'd say your plans look good for a younger Corn. You'll need a 36" viv for it when it's adult.

i agree with the heat mat thing. also i agree with the hygrometer? i dont think you will need it especially here in the UK because its not exactly exotic hot dry weather. i think as long as the humidity is 55 - 65% your snake will do fine (in UK were i live humidity is normally arounfd here anyway). you could also add things that he could climb over and under etc.

good luck

lee
