Another heating question

Ok so I have my snake in a 10 gallon tank. For substrate I have a fir and spaghnum peat moss mix as substrate and I recently added a tank heater underneath the tank rather than the light(didnt like the light plus I accidently broke it) So my question is due to my substrate I added a peice of outdoor carpet lightly covered with peatmoss mix on the bottom so she dosent burrow down and lay directly over the heater. Now my question is do you think outdoor carpet is too thick and preventing adequate heat and I would need to buy reptile carpet or whatever they call it since it is slightly thinner or buy a all new substrate together. Or do you think she is fine. I have left on my light(still working but I dont trust it now) since the heater hasnt even been on for 6 hours to reach its heating level so I dont know how well its heating yet.

the easiest way to regulate at UTH is to use a thin layer of substrate and then take a temperature reading off the glass of the tank directly above the heater. The carpet is probably not too thick gut it's harder to regulate a thick layer than a thin layer.
