Just got a snake :) Shedding question

I intended on getting a corn that was a little bit older but fell in love with an (anery?) hatchling at the New York Reptile Expo today, just haaad to get him.

The guy said that the corns haven't been fed or shed(so I should wait until he does and then feed him) yet but my guy looks a bit 'flakey'? and Im wondering what that means. Did he shed and have some bits still on? Or is he turning blue and getting ready to? I've attached two pics :) not really clear but I didn't want to stress him out any further so he's hiding in his tank now. In the photos you can see he's a bit dull on the underside (unless anerys are like that...) and his eye too? If you look on the lower parts of his body you can see some bits flaking off.
If he HASN'T shed yet, that would mean hes about... 8-10 days old when he does right?

Dont take my word for it but it looks as if its in blue... watch it over the next few days and if there is no change get a wet towel and let him slide inside it and try and get all his dead skin off and make sure its off his eyes and tail tip!

Lovely little corn though!

Congrats on the new baby! In the second picture it looks as though his eye might be a bit blue - and if the breeder said he hadn't been fed at all or shed yet, then yes that means he's only 8-10 days old. Pretty young. He should shed soon! If he really is that young, then don't feed him until after the 1st shed... I would wait a couple days anyway just because you are supposed to allow them to settle anyway, but keep and eye on him and see if he sheds! Good luck with him, he's very pretty! Got a name yet?

He looks like he is about to shed in 1-4 days because his eyes look cloudy and his skin is pretty dull. Make sure his humidity is between 50-60% and you should have a good shed. I am surprised that the breeder sold the snake before he had his first meal or shed. Usually breeders wait until the snake has had at least 3 meals before they sell them.

I was going to say that too Relentless. I hope he's not a slow eater or gives you problems! Actually he's younger then 8-10 days old- when he sheds, then he will be 8-10 days old. I'm surprised the breeder didn't give you more exact info if it just hatched as well!

IMHO he looks blue, since the breeder said he hadn't shed, I would wait to feed the babe until it sheds. It may go clear fooling you, it should shed it one piece, most snakes will not eat at this time. I would make sure you have very small pinkies for the first meals, and don't be surprised if it doesn't eat. As previously stated resist the earg to handle it, for a few days. susan

I'm surprised a breeder sold a hatchling to a new owner, but that may just be my opinion.

No name yet, thanks for the quick replies! I'll be keeping a careful watch over the next few days.
I'm a bit nervous about having such a young guy, just paranoid about him not eating or something but I didn't see any older ones with that colour. There were some beautiful amel motleys but I think one is enough for the time being! :(

Hes in blue, and I suspect its his first ever shed. Meaning the "breeder" should have told you this snake was right out of the egg - not ideal as someones first snake. Baby corns will sometimes take a while to start feeding. I hope you were highly discounted on him since theres no guarantee of feeding.

Thanks for popping in Elle, I was afraid to ask how much was paid, I hope not much.
Viva, no one is trying to scare you, please ask lots of questions, use the 'search' function on this forum. Please let us know when it sheds and you have attempted to feed, because there are many tricks if it doesn't eat at first.

This guy isn't the first snake I've taken care of but he is the youngest so Im just asking you experts!! on your advice.
The breeder did say, wait a week until he sheds and then attempt feeding him a live pinkie. He also gave me his business card so I can contact him if anything happens. I'm not for live feeding though, I have small frozen ones in the freezer and will try that first.

Oh, and he was $25. The corns were ranging from 25-30.
(Don't see an option to edit my previous post...)

Well I'm glad to hear you didn't really overpay. And its good that you would be able to contact the breeder!
Please feel free to ask any questions! Oh and btw, what other snakes have you had?
