How many times will my hatchling shed?

He is now 12wks. He has had one shed w/ me since a mth ago. His shed was not complete & I felt he was getting ready too & I missed the boat on putting him into a bowl w/ wet paper towels. So I want to be prepared this time around. How much longer after the first shed home will they shed again. He's 3mths. now. His skin is feeling scratchy in some small areas. Is this a sign? UGH why does this seem so hard for me!! I so want him to have a complete shed this time around.

Any suggestion, etc. welcomed!

Hi there,

Firstly, congrats on your snakie! lol They are such a joy and pleasure to own!

You say his shed was not complete, meaning it was in pieces? I hope you got everything off with the last shed...lol

It does sound like he might be getting ready to shed again sometime soon, it's usually very easy to tell when they are going to shed, their eyes go "milky" or "blue" and their colour dulls considerably. It is often more difficult to tell with amel types, especially butters I have noticed! lol

I am not sure what heating source you are using but if you are worried that he won't shed in one piece again, you can put a container of water on top of the heat source, this will increase the humidity quite a bit!!! :) Make sure he has a cool bowl of water too, I am not sure if warm water is okay for them but I am sure it will be fine...lol

PS: if you are feeding once every 5-7days, he should shed roughly once a month or so...but this is just a general rule of thumb as they all grow at different rates. :)

Thank you so much. I am shocked I am learning this so fast. Its hard for me to tell, but it is that time again. He is on a 5 day feeding schedule. It seems so hard to me,:awcrap: & my 6yr. old son gets it. He says "Momma Dani feels soft & ruff underneath a little, I think he is going to shed",We got our new Corn today she is 4wks old & Boy am I in love!! She is beautiful!!
Its my 6yr. olds. he named her Cindy. My 4yr. old DD has Dani, I was so tired of them fighting over who was going to hold him. I told my son to go online & pick out a color & of course he gets one that was sorta hard to find. lol

Anyway, thanks again for your help!

Putting a moist hide in for him and spraying him are good and are things you can do, but they are not things you must do. I don't do anything for my snakes when they are blue and they shed just fine. Usually they only have bad sheds if you have an air-conditioner/de-humidifier in your house or live in a dry dry place. I live in a fairly dry place and never have any problems. I'd say leave him to shed with on his own and see how it goes. If he starts to have a bad shed then just take him out, soak him for a minute and then let him crawl though a wet paper towel that you are holding around him. This will take off anything that hasn't shed in a jiffy.

When I bought him I was told he did not need anything for heating or humidity. I live in LA & keep the house around 78 & at night around 72. So I was confused as to why I did not need a heater. So I do not have one. Tonight I went to a different reptile place & asked them & the guy said I needed a heater & good sticks, tree limb type items to help him shed. So I bought a rept therm mini heater strip (UTH), he is in a 10 gallon tank (that has height on it) & as the guy suggested to put it on the side of the terrarium so I did. To touch, that heater is very warm. I have vines & a tree stump hide, coconut hide & a tree limb for climbing w/ he is starting to do. Oh & of course a bowl of water big enough for him to get in if he wants. No light. I really hope he has a normal shed this time. Last time when he shed I just got him so he was hiding a lot I could not tell if he had shed & his bedding is white. Its the carefresh (I think its called) bedding. I had also fed him & left him alone for a little over 2 days & then when I pulled him out is when I noticed he was shiny & more spunky acting.
So what do you think of the heater I got? Its not a dial one. :awcrap:

Thanks from a worried corn mom :)
