Mouse Genetics Question

Hi Guys!

Been trying to find info on mouse genetics with now luck, just found pics of the varieties but no genetic info.

My goal is to breed "pinto" mice, ie mice with alot of pretty white patterns.

I have a male pink-eyed dove with a stripe down his face (names is Badger). The female I originally used for breeding is a Black self called Gypsy (she is VERY shiney and smooth but I don't think she is a proper satin).

In their first litter, they had black selfs, a few white-faced blacks and some striped faced black babies. Only one had a small white marking elsewhere on his body.

I kept the only two girls from that litter, a black with a tiny white spot on her head (Dot) and a female with a broad stripe (Theresa).

Gypsy has had her second litter now, Pretty much the same as above except two have markings on their shoulders as well. Most have white faces.

Dot has just had her first litter (yesterday). And I wanted to know what colours she might have, the father is Badger (pink-eyed Dove with stripe), Could I get dove babies with patterns? I know most will most likely be blacks.

This is the way I understand their genetics, please correct me if I am wrong, I am losely basing my assumptions on my knowledge of horse, corn and rat genetics! lol

Badger - Dove, Pink-eyed, Stripe (I am ASSUMING that the stripe down his face is caused by the same gene as what causes white patterns all over the body)
Dot - Black het dove, pink eyes, stripe...

lol I hope this all makes sense and someone can assist me! lol

Sounds like you are on the right track. I'm not too familiar with mouse patterning genes. Every time I get a spotted mouse (the only pattern I've found until recently), they have died before maturing to breed.

I just recently got a couple new patterned males to breed with my albino females but haven't had any litters yet. One is a red/fawn with e head stripe.

are you taking about something similar to these??

one way you will definatly breed them is to get two homozygouse(soz about spelling) pinto mice and breed them. if they are both homozygouse then you should get 100% pinto babies.

I frequently look at [cornsnake.com member] Sasheena's mouse genetics webpage. This is probably the best site i have seen concerning mouse genetics, colors, and names for colors/types. Hopefully, this site will help you with your questions or possibly confuse you even more--but it really is a thorough site.

All my mice are white with the red eye. I thought about getting some black males to breed to them to see what happens. I would keep all black males and all white females for breeding. If one of the breeding trios dies, I could tell at a glance if it were the male or femals.

good idea. i have a full albino colony that gave birth today. i do not know which female gave birth as she didnt even look pregnant. so she hid it well. now i dont know what ones are breeding and what are not (lucky for the mice) so i cant decide who stays and who goes. when i look in all the mice abanded the nest.

with my other colony they are all differnt colours so this morning i found a female still giving birth. but i still would of knew who it was due to different colours.

lol Well, my feeling is that you are keeping the smelly critters anyway, you might as well keep pretty ones! lol

Great news!!! The bubs from 2nd generation are getting their hair and guess what!!! There are some "Badger" coloured ones (Light beige) with white markings!!! lol

And all the really nice black and white bubs from the first litter are females too! Hooray! Makes a nice change! All the really nice ones are usually males and I have to feed them off! lol

i am just waiting for my order of 20 mouse cages to arrive and then when they grow fur i will have to decide a keeper colony

i think they are too fasanating to be fed. i would much prefer to breed them and see what colour babies

Honey is the most gorgeous little mouse I have ever seen! Her face is a perfect badger pattern!

PS: I removed the raw peanuts after I took this pic, I had just given them fresh food and only saw the peanuts afterward.

such cute babies Thats the only 'bad' part of raising them yourself... after they get hair and are all cute looking After about 15 years I still have a hard time doing it ...

hehehe Well, I am starting a second colonny and still need a few females for my first colonny so I have the advantage of being able to choose the cutest ones to keep! lol

It is very difficult to feed off the pretty ones though! lol

I must admit, I have a harder time feeding off my rats than my mice though...Keep getting pretty colours from the rats! lol

LOL me too!! It doesnt help when my son is right there saying OOOOO and OH that one is so pretty I think we should keep it ... blahhhh hehe doesnt make it any easier at all. lol

lol My bf's 7yo son is really funny, when I still bought fuzzies from the petshop, he would pet them and stroke them all the way home, saying how cute they are, then, the second we got home, he would toss them in for the snakes and watch them eat! lol

He thinks I'm a VERY cool "Step Mom"...lol I have snakes and I let him ride my horse! lol
