Feeding...Converting Adults from Live to F/T

DragonBoy

Crazy Cornsnake Breeder
Subject line says it all.
I recently acquired some adult stock for my breeding program from another breeder. He was feeding live mice, and everything I have raised is on F/T. I tired quickly having to buy 4 mice a week for each of these gals. I have never converted a snake from Live to F/T so I have no clue even where to begin. :shrugs: Thanks for any and all suggestions.

well, first just offer them F/T and see what they do. You might also try wiggling them, thawing them dry, wet mice can confuse a fussy live eater I've found. Lock them up with the dead mouse over night and see what happens and if it doesn't work, see if a few weeks of not eating sharpens their feeding response. I had a picky live eater who only took a month of not eating at all to decided he was okay with eating F/T.

Right, I'd just try, first. But give them a good chance for success- have the prey hot- like 101F to 103F, and pretty well dried off.

My WC corn took FT no questions asked the first time I offered. And who's that person who had the WC temporary visitor gravid ratsnake or whatever it was, that laid eggs in a laying box just like she'd been doing it all the time, that then she was going to feed up before releasing her, and gave her FT. The snake looked at them funny for a minute, then decided to eat.

But if that doesn't work, try a FK.

And maybe it wouldn't hurt to let them get a teeny bit extra hungry for the first attempt- like skip one feeding.

thanks

Hard for me on an emotional level to skip feedings because they have me so well trained they knock on the tub to get my attention when they are hungry or Bubba my big Ball Python throws his hide box around. They have me so well trained. As my other half says quit applying human emotions to the animals. The turtles and gold fish all do the same. I will let them go a full week and see what happens. They are accostomed right now to getting 2 mice every 3-4 days, so we will see what happens.
Thanks again for all the advice.
Scott

Um, yeah- I'll say they have you trained! I'm a pretty generous feeder, and I feed adults every seven days. It's not uncommon for people to feed adults, especially males, on a 10-14 day schedule. So my big porker Florida King (850ish) eats two mice one week, three mice the next, the mice in the 24 gram range, and he's gaining quickly on that plan!
