which thermostat?

Tinycritters

It is what it is
okay, i know i'll end up getting a better thermostat later on. However i'm having some financial issues at the moment, and really want a thermostat for my guys.(getting fed up constantly adjusting the rheostat) there are two on reptilesupply.com i'm looking at. I've heard about the Zoo Med RetiTemp 500R one, but has anyone used the ESU temp. controler? which one is better (if either are)?

I've never used either but the one I see mentioned MOST is the ZooMed. A lot of people seem to trust that one when they are on a budget. I have a Helix and I love it a lot.

Before I got my ranco thermostat (its not proportional like a helix but its good for small collections) I used the ESU thermostat. And it worked pretty well actually. It still would fluctuate a little here and there but not bad like a rheostat. I don't know anything about the Zoo Med one, but I think both are essentially the same, I have heard good things about both.

I have two 500Rs, one on a 20L glass tank and the other on a 16qt. Sterilite container. Both hold their temps well enough but the one on the Sterilite fluctuates a little more than I'd like (+- 3F). I think it's because it's on a table next to a window. Good value for the money though.

If it’s not too late, I would recommend a Big Apple Herp, BAH-100.

BAH-100

I noticed they don't carry the BAH-1000 anymore, but the BAH-100 looks similiar. I used a BAH-1000 in the past and was very happy with its performance. I would say at most +/- 2 degrees which for an analog thermostat, I felt was quite reasonable.

Please note I’m not saying anything bad about the Zoo Med or ESU, I just don’t have any experience with them.

Regards,
Steve

I've got 3 of the ZooMed 500Rs and they work fine. They used to run 5 corn snake tanks but the corns are in a rack with a herpstat and the ZooMeds are now heating my b. dubia colony and another has been turned into an incubator.

I've never used the ESU or BAH but I've heard horror stories of the ESU blowing out and leaving the heat mat on full blast. The BAH looks identical to the ESU.
